GPS accuracy is really bad.

Another run in auto select mode. This is not cherry picking, both pictures from the same run where 80% of the track is off the sidewalks and lanes I have used. One bit shown in the picture is where I ran there and back on the same side walk so E3 can't even be consistent with itself...

I also hike a lot in the mointains and this margin of error is dangerous!!!

  • Exactly!

Instead of nitpicking about absolutely irrelevant stuff, most complainers here should actually try the watch in the outdoors 20km away from the closest house.

I'm sure Garmin didn't develop e.g. their Enduro 3 for people complaining that the entrance to their favorite soy latte macchiato place is 5m off the GPS location on the watch ... Wink

  • But that is not 10-20 yards inaccuracy - thats 1 - 2 metres

Also dont forget that the maps have errors as well. Buildings are not always lined up perfectly, or paths - I run a lot in open areas with paths and I can tell you that maps are not always 100% accurate in paths in the open

  • Put it to 1-second sampling rather than smart then

  • I replied to a similiar thread a day or two back and having has the Enduro 3 for two months and run it with an Epix 51mm and sometimes even a Coros watch, my feeling is:

With identical settings (auto / SatIQ) or both Garmins set to to ALL + Multiband the Epix is overall more accurate - far less wandering into rivers or buildings.

The Coros Pace 3 in All Systems but not multiband is pretty much the same accuracy as the Enduro in All Systems + multiband!

This drift into the river and then diving into the buildings after the bridge crossing is fairly typical (Enduro 3 is the purple line)

i do not think its terrible but it IS noticeably worse than the Epix 51mm for wandering off the actual track. I think Garmim simply traded some accuracy for battery life personally.

  • Are you on 1-sec or smart recording? I'm not seeing any real issues on 1-sec. Occasionally, but not very often. But I'm not an urban runner and so I think part of it is that I'm in areas that are far easier for GPS tracking anyway?

  • My Suunto will last longer than my Enduro 3.

I am only in the Garmin team today because Suuntos new China policy. I am not so keen to give away all my information 24/7 to Beijing.

My Garmin is better on alot of things and offer way more functions, but when it comes to battery and navigation Garmin have a long way to go before they will be as good as a Suunto.

Really good GPS is only handy when it comes to know exactly how long i have travelled. Other than that my Garmin is within what I would say acceptable accuracy

  • 1 second.

I am more if a trail runner but I’ve seen similar on mountain trails. There is another similar thread started by someone else where I posted some trail comparisons with it diving off into bushes.

it seems Garmin do have an open case for GPS accuracy according to the other thread.

I think a lot of people won’t notice it or won’t care. But there seems to be a step back from the last gen.

  • I'm not seeing that. I have my watch set to smart record. Overlay on to local aerial maps looks pretty good. A couple of meters off at most. Pretty happy when compared with other GPS devices I have had. (GPSMAP 61, 64 66, Original Epix, Fenix 6x pro, inreach mini, iphone)
You can switch to every second if you really want the accuracy on the map. But I have no issue navigating complicated remote bush with the watch. Maybe it is local mapping issue?

  • In my case its impossible to be a local mapping issue because I am running on bridges over rivers in my sample above, and all the watches are pretty much on the bridge (Enduro 3 slightly in the water)

I cant walk on water sadly, ergo the local maps are correct.

i think this is a red herring and be easily demonstrated as such if you are using more than one watch at the same time and one of the watches is on the expected location you ran or walk and the other is not which can easily be seen by paying attention to the purple track from the Enduro 3 here

  • Also don't use context mobile to view the tracks as I've seen it smooth the data. Use connect.garmin.com as, well in the past anyway, didn't smooth so much
