Turn off voice prompts from phone when navigating

Hi,

For some reason (after update 17.1) my wife’s phone has started to voice audio prompts of POI’s on a course we’re following.

It’s an iPhone and had Garmin Connect closed at the time.
I’ve check a few settings and they’re the same as mine though mine didn’t start talking to me on our run!!

Any idea where this option would be? Thanks.

  • I certainly hope it’s not a ‘feature’ with no ability to switch it off!

Still doing it here on an iPhone even with the phone on mute. How does it even override that??

  • Same here, Epix Gen 2. I would expect that if the phone is in "Do Not Disturb" and "Silent" then it shouldn't be having voice prompts at all. Ideally when it is set like this I want the buzzing on the watch to let me know about turns and upcoming course points, but the voice is incredibly annoying. The only way I've found to fix it is disconnect the watch from Bluetooth - which is a poor solution because I often save points while scrambling / building routes and use the Garmin Connect app to quickly give the point a descriptive name. Is there any workaround that leaves the buzzing on but the voice prompts off?

  • Specifically for Navigation, there is a separate option for Turn Prompts.
    On the watch you can;
    1. Open Menu
    2. Select Naviation
    3. Select Alerts
    4. Toggle Turn Prompts

This will turn off prompts during navigation, it will however also turn of the prompts in the watch, so there is no nuance there. But I have been turning this on/off depending on the type of run that I am doing.

  • This is also a problem with Forerunner 955/965 watches. I'm enjoying my 955 but this bug is really annoying!

There is a very long thread of complaints with folks requesting that it gets fixed here:

     https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-965/374071/voice-prompts-for-turns-during-course-navigation---turn-off

Unfortunately Garmin have now locked the thread without any confirmation that anything will ever get done about it. "We will continue to monitor the impacts.." seems to imply that right now it is not even seen as a problem.

Hopefully Garmin-Laurie will provide a more positive update here soon, and that any fixes get rolled out to all watches impacted.

  • I wish it's a bad joke from Garmin ...

    "All,

I've added everyone who has granted me permission to our report tracking this separate audio setting request. If you have not yet commented with permission, please now contact Product Support directly so one of our support agents can add you.

I am not sure if this separate setting will be added in the future, but I definitely understand the desire for the option. We will continue to monitor the amount of impacts. Thank you to everyone who has participated in this thread!

  • Update October 15, 2024:

    I wish it's a bad joke from Garmin .

Currently to disable sounds during navigation you would need to disable navigation turn prompts. While we are tracking this experience, and reporting this our engineers, this is currently working as expected.

If this is something that you are experiencing, and are concerned about this, please feel free to reach out to Garmin Product Support so you can be added to this report.

If, however, you are not able to disable the audible navigation prompts, even with turn prompts and audio prompts disabled, this is still something our engineers are investigating as a possible software concern. So please let us know, when reporting this.

  • Does this really mean that to disable the voice shouting at you from the phone on a lovely relaxing hike, you'd have to disable the watch buzzing and showing a prompt when a turn is coming up? This is a huge failure in user experience for a very expensive bit of kit, and something that should be easy to solve.

Ideally for an activity you would simply be able to have an option to enable/disable *voice* prompts, so that for things where you don't need a voice (such as a hike where it might be easy to feel the buzz on the watch and check after that) you don't get a voice popping up from your phone, or for something like a run you could keep them enabled so that if you are wearing headphones (or even just carrying your phone) you can hear the voice prompts for the upcoming turns, as it is much easier to miss the phone buzzing.

Am I missing something that the behaviour I have described is how it currently is - as in you either get the watch buzz and turn prompts on the watch face but always have to have the voice, or you have to sacrifice all of them? If I've understood it right and that is the case it's a hugely annoying 'feature', and is really more a lack of appropriate configuration options. There are a lot of hyper-specialised features being added which I love but this seems like a huge oversight,

  • Turning a bug into a feature Dizzy faceDizzy

  • Is there any ETA on this? Clearly someone managed to develop most hatred "feature" of all time in Garmin watches. Or rather made bug into a feature.

  • I'm not sure Garmin are listening properly. All prompts are turned off and the audio prompts on the phone continue. The only way I can get them to turn off is to turn off my bluetooth connection. It's obvious surely that this is a system issue as this is started after an update. Surely it can't be too hard to resolve this. I have tried all settings and followed the advice. The voice prompts which has oddly switched to a male voice just continues.
