Compass on Mk2i not tracking smoothly or accurately?

I'm on my 3rd replacement in a year (Garmin Support has been awesome in this aspect) namely for compass-related issues. Every watch has had this issue and at this point wondering if there's just faulty hardware used or a fluke with the software. I'd love for it to be user error - at least that's something that can be fixed quickly!

In short, when I open the compass widget, the compass constantly dances all over the place when standing still or moving in a straight line. I make sure I'm always at least 18" away from any electronic device when testing and usually do a fresh calibration each time. I've tested accuracy with both my phone compass and an analog dive compass and have never been able to track accurately even within an acceptable margin of error. I'm always between at best 10° off or worst case upwards of 40+° off. Both phone and Mk2i are set to magnetic north (to match my analog compass). Even when using the User setting to adjust for any variance, it's accurate in the direction I set it and then wanders 10 to 20° or more when start turning in a circle before being roughly accurate with my starting point.

First noticed this on my first dive with it when it landed me back to a different part of shore that was fenced off (construction site) right next to my entry point so we had an adventure scrambling rocks and hoping our gear wouldn't get snagged by the fence.

Have a ticket open with Garmin and would love to figure out if there's something wrong with the watch/user or just chalk it up to a compass which will never work right (sad for such an expensive DC). Since I do other sports with it like hiking and biking, an accurate compass is fairly important for me. Thanks.
