G1 freezes when freediving

Today, my Garmin Descent G1 freezed the second time while i was freediving (watch was in freediving mode). Suddenly, the screen was completely empty while i was under the surface. I had to restart the watch like if it would been turned off.

The watch is completely useless for me now because im scared to take the watch on a dive now.

What can i do?

  • Hello

I am sorry to hear this occurred. Since this issue occurred during a dive, I would agree that you will not want to use this for diving again until this is address. You will want to contact Garmin Product Support directly to report this concern.

  • This just happened to me today.

On a freedive to 18m, still worked at the bottom, at the surface the screen was blank. Battery was low but still had ~2 hours shown. About half an hour later, it turned itself back on, without me doing anything (I did not try to turn it back on myself). It still recorded the dive session, except the last dive, although it did show an exit point on a different continent :). Seems likely a new software version bug, can you comment if you recently updated (or better, what software version are you on?).

    Software version: 16.10 (c75b5ca)

    GPS: 6.30

    CIQ: 3.4.4

    BMX:11.0.3

    BLE/ANT:1.04

    Sensor Hub: 23.09

  • Softwareversion 16.10

    CIQ: 3.4.4

    BMX: 11.0.3

    BLE/ANT: 1.04

looks exactly the same like yours…

  • I'm experiencing the same issue from time to time,
it happens only in cold water, when going down from temperature 22c down to 6-12c on the bottom.

Watch is turning off during ascent, after booting it up again it works fine for the rest of the session.

This is happening since very long time maybe even more than 1 year.

I'm always updating software as soon as it's available for me but still getting this issue from time to time.

My friends using the same model, in the same conditions, experience the same issues.

I heard a rummors that also submerging it (ambient temperature 30c) into ice bucket (8c) will cause reboot but can't confirm that.

I found this on device it may be related or helpful, I don't know what this logs contain but for me "Failed to get pressure reading!" and "Flight detected" seems to be suspicious.

  • Interesting. Cold water makes sense, I'm diving in a pond in Massachusetts, can't say it's warm. I've dove in that pond many times now (in colder weather) but first time it happened for me.

Out of curiosity, how do you get the logs off the watch?

  • You need to install garmin express and then when you connect watch with cable it will apear as external drive.

I found logs in folder EVNTLOGS.

I think earlier there was something like crashlog, but I can't find it anywhere.

  • please take a look at my details for the issue, maybe it would be helpful to fix this

  • Similar log from mine:

Crash logs in the folder //GARMIN/Debug might be more interesting. However, I would rather reach out to the Product Support through their website at https://support.garmin.com and send it to them, than posting it here on the user forum.

  • I have /GARMIN/Debug but no files inside, only empty folders Uploads/ULF.

Should I prevent watch sync to keep files there after crash ?
