G1 freezes when freediving

Today, my Garmin Descent G1 freezed the second time while i was freediving (watch was in freediving mode). Suddenly, the screen was completely empty while i was under the surface. I had to restart the watch like if it would been turned off.

The watch is completely useless for me now because im scared to take the watch on a dive now.

What can i do?

  • Should I prevent watch sync to keep files there after crash ?

Not necessary. Crashlogs are not deleted on sync, they stay on the watch till the next crash (one old crashlog kept as backup anyway).

If there is no crashlog, then the watch might have died due to low power - for example the voltage of the battery, when low, may drop under the safe threshold when the current suddenly increases significantly. For example when vibrating. Try disabling vibrations and see whether it helps. And also avoid diving with low battery.

  • Thanks for the advice but battery was full and disabling vibrations is not an option for me, I use this watch as a dive computer because of vibrations :)

I made a call to garmin support, they provided me the steps to dump the crash logs and opened the support ticket for this issue.

  • but battery was full

In your case perhaps (you did not mention it), but the other case reported here, mentioned diving with just 1hr remaining. That's already definitely too little for a safe dive.

I use this watch as a dive computer because of vibrations

I understand (being a freediver myself too), but I meant disabling it temporarily in order to see whether it is the culprit (assuming you experience the shutdowns frequently or reproducibly). In the meantime you can continue using the beep tone - it does not draw much current.

  • Since the watch freezing, rebooting, or shutting off during a dive activity can be a safety concern, if you are experiencing this issue please do not use the watch for diving. Please reach out to Garmin Product Support directly to report this concern, so we can investigate this.
