Battery Life

Got my Athlete on Thursday and charged it to 100% straight away. After 3.5hrs of non-GPS activities without music and a lot of playing around with it by yesterday (Monday) it was down to 8% so I started a 'pretend' GPS activity to let it run down to zero. I then charged it up to 100% and left it charging for another hour - so hopefully it would have had a good chance to calibrate between 0% and 100%.

It's now 24 hours on and with no activities and just normal usage, it's dropped 14% so I'd predict a battery life of 7 days - less than what I came to expect with my f5+. Of course the battery indicator might still be as vague as the f5+ and maybe I will still get closer to the promised 12 days out of it, but what's other people's experience so far over the first few days of ownership?

  • I figured after two additional full charge and discharge it was time to report the results.  Very disappointing at this point.

All results are with all alerts disabled, stock watch face, no back-light and OxPulxe ON

Monday at 6am took it off the charger.

    Monday-Thursday - no workouts, just activity/sleep tracking

Friday morning at 6am was at 11%

Friday at 9am took it off the charger

Friday - 45 minute run with music, HRM and Stryd

Saturday - 40 minute run with music, HRM and Stryd

Sunday - 70 minute run with HRM and Stryd

Sunday at 6pm the battery is at 24%

Basically five days is a best case result if no workouts occur and four if 2-3 workouts are done within 4 days.

  • PulseOx is a battery killer.  So is music.  Those numbers don't seem too off to me given what you are doing.  If I run for a hour, with podcasts and HRM, pulse ox on for sleeping,  I'm going to lose at least 20% of my battery during a day, probably 25% because I'll usually get it on a charger and never see a true full day.

I miss my F5, where I wasn't doing any of this stuff and it was at 95% every day.

Anyways, I have mixed feelings here.  On the one hand, it is what it is, on the other, telling us we get 9 days of battery life but only if we don't use a feature that's one of the products defining features doesn't seem, exactly, honest to me.

This also bolsters a case that I make for the AW.  Mainly, that, yes, it's got worse battery life but if you play music, listen to podcasts, it's 9 hours vs 6 hours and a lot closer than many argue for, at least, my use cases.

  • Great points, I also have mixed feelings.  Only 9 more days before I'm outside the return window and seriously considering staying with my F5+ for running and the AW for day to day use.

  • I’m thinking about selling it as I can’t return it.  At least get some/most of the money back.

The Bluetooth is a big issue but I was watching the heart rate on some light intervals and it was really bad.  Yes, I know intervals are rough on watches.  Also, my knee needs a rest so while I can still use it for strength (it’s surprisingly easy to use for this), cycling and so forth, things like VO2, recovery, running metrics, a lot of the other features are almost useless.

That leaves the not very smart, smart functions that this watch has.  So, I can make a payment, track my steps and heart rate as meaningful use cases.  Hiking with the current state of the Bluetooth makes music not quite useless but not quite useful either.

It’s not all bad, at least it’s not scratches, spO2 has been interesting, GPS has been good, the new band fits really well, the buttons are really solid, but really what part of that is worth the $1,000 premium over an AW if I’m not running seriously?

  • For what it's worth: got another Expedition recently, no mushy buttons, exact same setup as before, now averaging 0,3% per hour instead of 2,8%.... So I guess it must have been more than just software related.....

  • I’m also concerned about the battery life. Out of the box the watch was 1%/hr. Now it’s about 1.8% no workouts, no music, marq watch face with HR. The watch is about 2 months old. My older P5 would hold 7 days including daily workouts. At this rate the battery will be dead in 2-3 months.

  • I thought for a second after the GPS update battery was better but it was just a few minutes.  Battery is down to 3 days tops no matter what I do.  It has been a while and Garmin knows it and they even release the Fenix 6 without  fixing the Marq series first.  Shame on Garmin!!!!!!
