Software Version 22.20 (crash??)

Hi,

I have been for months and months (almost 3 and half years) a lucky owner of a Garmin Fenix 5X Saphire... no issues with crashes or battery (usually lasts 10 to 18 days, depending on exercise level), always worked fine (only known problem is altitude, need to update correct altitude almost every morning).

Last night (4 AM) woke up, tried to see the time and the watch was showing a loop between Garmin Blue Triangle and phrase "converting GPX files... been there for at least 3 hours.

SOFT RESET, no change, HARD RESET the same... then remember the RESET LIGHT+START+BACK, when need to release START at 1st beep and release all at 2nd beep.

Done it  a few times (3 or 4) and at a certain point HEART RATE light came on and it boot OK, losing everything of course. Need to pair it again (still not receiving alerts), etc etc.

After that I realise, as the AUTO SOFTWARE UPDATE was ON, that the new software version was already installed. I reckon that was the cause for the crash all this stupid lost of settings.

At a certain point I thought that I need to bring the Fenix 3 out again, but luckily all seems to be ok now.

Anyone has experienced this?

Regards,

RL

  • Exactly the same as I initially posted.

Lost everything, even if still possible too recover some data. Need to install all apps and widgets again..

As I said before I have been and happy/lucky owner of a Fenix 5X since Feb 2018, never had problems with battery, etc (before this was using around 0,3 to 0,4% per hour, lasting a couple of weeks usually (with phone connection all the time)... only issue was/is still the altimeter (my Fenix 3 is much better with that), living between sea level and 225m I know exactly which altitude I am most time, but to keep it right I need to update manually every morning. Don't understand why Garmin can fix it once and for all.

    Good day to all

  • Yes, lost everything. Just spent 2 hours exporting my *.fit files from Garmin Connect (one by one) to add to my backups, then updated widgets and watch face - WTF again!

  • No problems on my 5s with 22.20

In fact it might be working better than before, GPS is not listed in the changelog but no GPS loss for days now which is unheard of on a Fenix5

  • copy your \GARMIN\SETTINGS\SETTINGS.FIT (and the other files too I guess) when your watch is working to your hard drive

when the watch reformats/resets,  copy all the files back in place, then make another copy of the working SETTINGS.FIT into  \NEWFILES and when you disconnect/restart the watch, it will restore the lost settings.

Not everything is restored, the firstbeat metrics are lost like vo2max, but watch faces, etc. from the working copy should be restored.

Again to be clear, you MUST put the SETTINGS.FIT into \GARMIN\NEWFILES or it won't import them and the watch will still be reset/cleared the the default settings.

  • Did a full watch reset. Habe now 450mb free storage. On the 4th activity the watch rebooted meanwhile.

  • Another one affected, great job Garmin. I can't start my watch even after master reset. It gets stuck on Loading maps.

  • For me this update caused loss of GPS, crash on save activity, and loss of IQ watch face - less severe but imagine it happened on a race day : (

I hope that Garmin will fix this. My apps all show 'queued' for updates and I hope that when these updates complete the watch will resume working.

I have had similar issues on update before. To avoid this in the future I have now turned auto update OFF and will research updates before installing.

  • After 3 or 4 resets, and waiting a lot, it has finally started. Now I have to reconfigure it all.

  • Thankfully the watch has recorded sleep last night, after doing the 3 button reset.

Seems like a poorly implemented update

  • I have been having problems since the update. Whenever I undertake an activity and try to save it, I get the wheel of death on my watch, saying it is saving. Does not display anything else for ages and then the activity is not recorded in a Garmin Connect. Also it randomly changed my watch face
