VO2 Max, Performance Condition, and Stryd

A couple of months ago, some people posted about the use of Stryd adversely affecting performance metrics such as VO2 Max. For example, people said they dropped from 56 VO2 Max to 48. I just got a Stryd and went for my first run this morning and saw my VO2 Max drop from 53 to 51. Is this a bug with Stryd? With GC? Or something else?
  • Stryd, is supported, you can add a field. My VO2max dropped from 46 to 38 -poor. Honestly, the times calculated there are imho more realistic now than with vo2 max 46.

    Still having the drop.
Been in Stryd beta for a while and thought it's been somehow sorted out, but some time later it dropped again. Basically Im stable : when speed comes from footpod vo2max is at 54. When speed comes from gps it goes to 57.
  • Maybe StrydAngus has a comment about Garmin support saying that Stryd is not supported by Garmin?
  • Thanks for the mention, arnoldus67!

Garmin does support Stryd. They have been great partners. In fact, we have been recognized as one of their top Connect IQ partners (https://developer.garmin.com/index.php/blog/post/connect-iq-developer-award-best-ant-enabled-app-winner) and integrate with their ANT+ profiles.

I exchanged emails with Garmin and I was told that the VO2 Max number changes because speed and distance is factored into the VO2 Max equation. Since Stryd provide highly accurate and stable pace & distance, we should see the resulting VO2 Max estimation change. Here is a paper explaining how the VO2 Max is calculated using heart rate and speed: https://www.firstbeat.com/app/uploads/2015/10/white_paper_VO2max_11-11-20142.pdf

  • So, the conclusion is that according to the fact that Stryd provides more accurate speed & distance data, the VO2max estimation is better !
Nevertheless, I had a chance last month to do a VO2max test (in fields) with a K5 Cosmed (http://www.cosmed.com/wearit/), and Firsbeat algorithm evaluation is far from the result (57 with K5, 47 with my F5x...)

In July my VO2Max was 54 on the F5X. Started to use stryd in august and since my VO2max has dropped to 37!!! but today soared to the astronomical hight of 39. I'm running stronger than ever having set 2 PR in this month alone... I'm a bit reluctant buying the song about better accuracy on VO2max with Stryd!! I however love Stryd and it's value is much higher than VO2max estimation from the watch.
  • Sorry to resurrect this old post.  But, this happened to me as well with the 645.  I've been running with Stryd and 645 for the past several months.  Decided to run with GPS instead recently due to my Stryd being dead.  The GPS was really accurate on distance for a 4 mile path run I do, and the pacing was pretty great.  But, what was interesting was my performance #'s just started sky rocketing.  Started with +1, then +5 to vo2max.  My final vo2max #'s are closer to what I've expected based on the estimated score from the Cooper 12 min track test.  I'm not sure what to make of it, but I think there's something odd going on with FirstBeat and Stryd's bouncy pacing data.  I find the GPS pace data to be more smooth and stable.  I think from now on, I'll likely just run with GPS for most of my slow runs.  I might switch back to Stryd for higher speed workouts.
