VO2 Max, Performance Condition, and Stryd

A couple of months ago, some people posted about the use of Stryd adversely affecting performance metrics such as VO2 Max. For example, people said they dropped from 56 VO2 Max to 48. I just got a Stryd and went for my first run this morning and saw my VO2 Max drop from 53 to 51. Is this a bug with Stryd? With GC? Or something else?
  • I haven't experienced any sudden changes in VO2 Max after I started running with Stryd a few months ago. Dunno about performance condition.

No significant changes here as well.
Pace and Distance from Stryd only. No Autocalibration.
  • I have the same problem and can see its relates to setting the distance of the Stryd footpod to always. My VO2 max were 57 on my FR630 and is now 52. My latate thresholds are also way to high as the watch is suggesting between 4:30-4:50 min/km and is should be something like 4:10-4:15. Anyone knows where to file a bug report to garmin?

I think this is a problem when using any footpod. I have a Garmin footpod. I stopped using it before the summer because I run mostly outdoors. It was set give the pace always and distance only indoors. My VO2Max went from 40 to 44 after I stopped using it. I am not sure which measurement is correct.
  • I found two older threads where the issue was mentioned. In one, StrydAngus said he'd look into the issue. In the other, it sounds like at least one person's performance metrics started to increase after the initial hit when he started using the Stryd.
  • Hi all,

I got some information on this.

Speed is being passed into the First Beat algorithm for VO2 Max calculations. Stryd is providing highly stable and accurate speed information which should improve the accuracy of the VO2 Max calculation.

Please let me know if you have any questions on this and I will help find an answer.

    Best,

can confirm this issue too (Firmwares: Stryd 1.1.2 / Fenix3 v8.30). VO2Max significantly dropped from 61 to 53 when started using Stryd.
  • I have now contacted garmin support about my issues with vo2max and lactate threshold problems when using stryd as footpod. Here is the reply:

It is regrettable that you experience problems with VO2max and lactate measurements. Unfortunately, Stryd Footpods/Sensors are not compatible with Garmin's products, so it is not possible for us to further investigate this issue. Therefore, please test with a Garmin product or product that is compatible with Garmin so that we may be of further assistance to you.

Interesting that the leading device for running with power isn?t supported by Garmin. Maybe my next running watch should be a polar or suunto as this is just not good enough.
