Garmin will be better! Update older Fenix!

Garmin has a terrible business policy when it comes to updating watch software … Glances widget, facepro, certainly most of the new firstbeat features can also be part of older fenixes … Eg. Apple updates (functionally not only bugs) Macbook (or Watch) for 4 years or more after, Garmin does not want to add new features its not one version below, which is simply a flop that it should not forgive. Even from the price policy, where the price far exceeds the competition. Likewise, he has an app store where most of them are unusable … let the new features (widgets) charge and put them in the shop … But this is too much. Watches are the best, but the approach to the customer has much better all competition.

You definitely have cause. I considered returning mine for the 945. I think in the end I just couldn’t be bothered.

  • Yes I wrote both. After the reset and the first night I thought it is ok again.

But now some days later with 2 runs and 2 Hikes I see that it is not. Even the new GPS does not show any step in the right direction. Bad and wrong pace, height measurement is not ok. Stairs count works sometimes, often not or really wrong. TOPO maps does not work. I use openfietsmap.

The worst thing is the bad pace display. It is more worse if you use a training. F.e you programmed "run with pace 5:30 to 5:45 min/km" than the watch often says you are in range but displays 6:50 and is hoping around every second. With Glonass or Galileo or only GPS always the same.

And due to the wrong pacing all functions which use pace as input variable are working wrong. Race prediction because Vo2 is bad, Training load is wrong etc etc.

Have you tried a x-second pacing datafield? I think you may have faulty hardware.

And are you a Mac user? As apparently the Mac GE can corrupt maps. The fact that Topo maps aren’t working are symptomatic of something far deeper and fixing that is definitely a first step

  • This entitled attitude is getting tiring, neither Garmin nor any company that sells gadgets with software owes you any additional features passed what is advertised at the time of purchase, period. When they do this, it is done only at their discretion, if the company wants to.

There was a time when even personal computers didn’t get free updates, Microsoft would sell you a new OS and new Applications to increase the functionality of your computer, same was Apple until 10 years ago or so. When you buy a microwave oven or a hammer the manufacturer doesn’t come to your house for free and improves it every few months, you’ve got what you paid for.

But putting this aside, it is simply not true that the software in newer Garmin watches can easily be ported or ported at all to older models, unlike computers, small gadgets like watches require very specific software because of the very limited resources like processing power and memory, to port even some of these features would require to write them almost from scratch specifically for older devices (that is if the hardware responsible for the feature is even present) now why would Garmin do this investment? specially when the end result would not only bring zero money return but would most likely just bring a backlash of angry users saying how Garmin broke their previously working watches. Apple does what they do because of the huge amount of money they have which no other company have, they are very unique in this sense, their devices are also very different. Ultimately, if you care more about a constant stream of new features I suggest just buy an Apple Watch.

  • All other sane persons? Don't generalize. I buy new smartphones and smartwatches every year, maybe year and a half, cause I love gadgets and can afford it. My guitar and amp for example I keep as long as I can as they have a soul and fit my playing style. So we all have our reasons.

Let's cut the bs now and enjoy our kit.

  • I would be happy if the watch worked exactly as it should and had zero new features.

As a well seasoned Garmin owner going back many decades i have seen this story played out many times (yet I still buy Garmin because I like the competition even less).

They will sell you a nice shiny new device which has bugs, they will provide updates that give extra features but does not address the bugs.

A year later they will release a new device and support for the old device will tail off and still have bugs remaining.

So you buy the new device with a new set of bugs

    ....Rinse and repeat....

  • I agree there is not reason that some of these can't be implemented. And it's not an "entitled attitude" at all. It's a customer centric attitude. Garmin considers a $700 watch that was release a little more than a year ago a "legal watch" That's BS.  People defending garmin are probably either employees or reviewers who get free watches.

  • Sorry, My wifi as almost never worked. My notifications are spotty at best. the headphone drop outs are near constant. It's hardly capable

Or people who are not experiencing the issues you're having and are happy with their device. Do you really believe everyone who is happy (or defending Garmin in your words) is on Garmin's payroll or receiving free watches?  That's like saying everyone who post their dissatisfaction with Garmin is either a Suunto or Polar employee or they get free watches from them.
