Garmin will be better! Update older Fenix!

Garmin has a terrible business policy when it comes to updating watch software … Glances widget, facepro, certainly most of the new firstbeat features can also be part of older fenixes … Eg. Apple updates (functionally not only bugs) Macbook (or Watch) for 4 years or more after, Garmin does not want to add new features its not one version below, which is simply a flop that it should not forgive. Even from the price policy, where the price far exceeds the competition. Likewise, he has an app store where most of them are unusable … let the new features (widgets) charge and put them in the shop … But this is too much. Watches are the best, but the approach to the customer has much better all competition.

  • AJRykala. Pleas read what the OP writes.

  • And look at  all those downvotes from the same old faces because I disagree.

    Moderated - profanity

  • If you've not had topo maps since 6.xx, then you have a possible hardware problem - why have you left such a problem unfixed? Thats quite a timescale to leave it!

You must have a hardware fault because I, like many others are getting excellent battery life out of ours. And I'm doing 80-120K per week with mine.

  • my f5+ does not what i paid for ! Even with the new GPS release pace is bad bad bad. Intervalltraining or pace based training is impossible. Topo maps are not displayed since Version 6.x. Battery drain is high. Was very well with beta 8.03 and now with 8.40 is bad again. So the watch does in a lot of points not what i paid 5 month ago.

Yet in the other post you said

"F5plus. Went back to 8.03 because with 8.22 there where some more bugs causings the watch crashing when doing a workout with an 3rd party App. Work+ from FBBrown.

Resetted the watch completly and now an Version 8.40 with very low battery usage and stable running all functions since some days. I'am happy with it."

    So which is it?

  • Oh look. Forerunner downvoting posts, even ones in other threads (power management) where he wasn't posting.

  • You can want to use something as much as possible, and still want to upgrade WHENEVER you want to. There's nothing crap about the plus series. It's still a very capable device

If you're buying a device based on what it 'may' do, not what it CAN do at the time of purchase - you're always going to be disappointed.

And people talk about Apple a lot here, and their long-term iOS upgrades. There's not really a huge amount in difference between say iOS10 and 13 on a 7+ (as an older phone for example)

Yes there's some new features, but it's limited by hardware. No real -time portrait features on the 7+ for example. So new features ARE hardware dependent

    It's the same here.

People say they'll go elsewhere - go on, try it. Polar don't do a mapping watch, Suunto are in a mess right now with the Movescount/Sportstracker app transition.

Thing is - every device will have something to annoy you. Buy your device for what it can do at the time of purchase, and enjoy it. If something new comes along, sell it and buy new. The plus series is still very capable and someone out there will be very happy for it. Better for someone else to have use of it then just dispose of it!

And thats not unique to Garmin. People holding Apple up as some god in regards to this forgets the whole Rosetta thing where they killed off classic apps - and wait till Catalina goes live and bye bye 32 bit apps. They don't run - full stop.

I went back to Mojave simply because of that.

You're not owed anything when you buy your device except what they say it will do then. And When possible Garmin do do features updates - Galileo came to the 5 for example.

But if (for example) Garmin gave 90% of the features of the 6 to the 5 plus series. Who'd buy a 6 then when they could get a 5 plus cheaper?

There is an argument, I agree, for perhaps a longer release cycle - as per between the 3 and 5 - but hardware moves on.

Downvote as much as you want, it's the truth.

  • Really? I sold my 5+ NOT because it’s crap, in fact it’s actually a GREAT watch, much to the chagrin of some people in this community. But, the F6 came out with features that I like that I wanted more. If I had to keep the 5+ because it wasn’t in my budget to buy the F6, then I’d be perfectly fine with that.

Garmin incorporates a business model of offering new products just as EVERY other company does and there is nothing wrong with that. If you don’t like how Garmin or frankly and other company operates (as you even mentioned Apple), then don’t buy electronics.

    Thanks for commenting!

To the moderators, learn what a personal attack is, as my original statement was NOT one.

  • People holding up Apple as a great example - wait till Catalina comes out of Beta. It has NO support for 32 bit apps at all, and people are going to flock to upgrade and find tonnes of old apps refuse to run.

I tend to beta test OSX versions but I lasted a week and did a Time Machine Restore to Mojave

And funny they say about upgrades, but I have a 2012 Mac Mini that I bought new. Yes I had software updates, but I don't have a lot of new features cause of hardware. For example, even if I bite the bullet and go to Catalina, my hardware will not do the new feature where you can use an ipad (i have a 9.7 pro) as a second screen.

Apple are just the same as every other manufacturer in that regard. They're not going to give you tonnes of new features while they want you to buy the new one.

Edit: Speaking as someone who bought their 5x+ the WEEK before the 945 came out. But I got it for £150 off so I aint complaining

  • I am kind of upset about this too seeing that I just bought an F5S+.

I can see Garmin not bringing features that rely on new hardware, but not bringing new widget styles to the older F5+ series just is silly.

I am tempted to return my F5s+ and get a new F6s Pro. Have zero interest in the larger F6 since the regular F5 bounced too much on my wrist when running.

OTOH, my F5s+ has excellent GPS reception.
