Montana 700i keeps turning off

I have a Montana 700i, actually it's my third unit and second cradle. Just after I bought my new 700i I found that it would randomly turn off. Sometimes this happens after a few hours, other times less than 30 mins. The other day it turned off twice in 30 mins. I have to press and hold the power button to turn it back on. When it restarts it just picks up where it left off. The unit has spent all of it's time so far in the car cradle in the car with the USB cable plugged into the 12v socket adaptor.

The dealer has done all they could by replacing 2 units and the cradle so I've contacted Garmin AU, but that has been a frustrating process and I haven't gotten anywhere except to learn that someone else in Australia has the same fault.

Anyone else got the same issue ?

  • In an attempt to stabilize this thing, I updated maps to the latest version then applied the following reset steps https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=rBN2xAZQtk3Wp0FvwL7Cd9. After I have reconnected my Fenix, Alpha 10, and WIFI. Fingers crossed this fixes the issue. I also uploaded all of the debug files to Garmin Supports upload site. Hopefully that helps the devs resolve the issue.

  • Resetting the device didn't seem to help. On my short hunt the next morning it did crash once, but I was able to catch it without too much data lost. During the first leg of the drive home it crashed about 10 times and froze twice in the first couple hours of the drive. I turned of Bluetooth and that seems to help, with only 1 crash right before my destination. The new process I have been using is using the explore app to set the destination over Bluetooth, then turning off Bluetooth on the device. I have still had a couple of crashes and now have Wi-Fi also turned off, I cannot confirm if I did prior. I do have Starlink running most the time as I drive so it is possible to have an active access point in while moving. At this point I'll reopen a support ticket to hopefully share my findings and move this along towards resolution.

  • I keep reposting this to keep it visible in this infinitely long thread.

    There are two separate issues.

One has to do with use in the powered mount. This one is likely caused by poor hardware design. There are reports that the mount actually damages the device contacts. Garmin sometimes replaces the mount and/or the device under warranty, but the problem recurs because the hardware has not changed.

The other has to do with random crashes (when the powered mount is not involved). I have seen forum posts where this occurs during routing. i have seen others where routing does not seem to be involved. Just general random crashes.

As said earlier in the thread, Garmin is tracking both of these issues separately. If you have not already done so, please open a support ticket. You will then be notified if Garmin finds a solution.

This has been going on for a VERY long time. to me, it seems increasingly unlikely that a firmware fix will be forthcoming.

  • Thanks, I had a couple of tickets in the past and also opened a support ticket today. I was connected via support chat to . I provided a few more support files and images of my dock and pin connections. I don't think my issue is from damaged hardware, but related to the random crashes. Garmin seems to be working on a fix, but does not have an ETA. I'm hopeful to see something soon, but who knows. I don't think it hurts for people to keep this updated with information that would help support troubleshoot. Seems to be the largest issue with this device.

  • Here to say 'me too'; can't believe I paid $700 for this I hope Garmin gets a class action lawsuit for this one

  • After speaking to you in a private message. It does appear that the issue with your montana is separate from the issue discussed in this thread. I will continue working with you regarding your device and issue and hope to get it resolved.

  • Hi there. Look I have the same issue and I am getting more upset from day to day. I am reading here since 2 years and still nothing! Whats up here? Why is it possible gor Garmin to launch almost every month one or two new products but nothing new here? A few minute ago I was readi g about an Edge 1050, new Fenix 8 but nothing about a fix for this problem. Can you change my second device? I was told so.

Moderator: Hi , your post was auto-flagged as spam since it was posted 3 times.

  • Yes, I have an issue with my Montana700i that I purchased about three weeks ago. It keeps turning off regardless of whether it is in the cradle or not, whether I'm using an external aerial or not. I have tried every conceivable scenario (as well as in Demo mode [simulator] ) and nothing works.....it just keeps turning off. FYI, I am a navigator by trade (ships), have been using GPS for 54 years, have had just about every Garmin handheld unit capable of handling professional scenarios e.g. 'auto pilot' and never had an issue. Never have I experienced anything more frustrating, stressful and dangerous at times, as having to quickly take out the batteries and restart the unit. I must confess, the unit is a work of art and so far my favourite but unfortunately I have to carry with me, my 66s for back up and as well as probably the most flawless unit of all so far, my Gpsmap76Csx. Oh, have one more thing to try,,,and that's turning off the "Auto pause"...let's see what happens. From my personal experience, I would point the finger at the processor, I don't think it can handle the job....and no, I don't use iR. Another issue with unit is, you can start a route in "Demo mode", stop navigation and when you "Resume navigation" it will freeze up with no fix. Regards and Merry Xmas to all.
