Montana 700i keeps turning off

I have a Montana 700i, actually it's my third unit and second cradle. Just after I bought my new 700i I found that it would randomly turn off. Sometimes this happens after a few hours, other times less than 30 mins. The other day it turned off twice in 30 mins. I have to press and hold the power button to turn it back on. When it restarts it just picks up where it left off. The unit has spent all of it's time so far in the car cradle in the car with the USB cable plugged into the 12v socket adaptor.

The dealer has done all they could by replacing 2 units and the cradle so I've contacted Garmin AU, but that has been a frustrating process and I haven't gotten anywhere except to learn that someone else in Australia has the same fault.

Anyone else got the same issue ?

  • Mine will shut down multiple times in a 6 hour period.  Thus the data will not be correct and I have to restart the unit to get back on track.

  • Did you update the firmware to 18.10?

  • Yes, and still powered off about 2 hours into a ride..

  • RMA'd sometime about July, new unit (700).

Turned off auto pause, off auto-start, no navigation, just tracking and music control, constant power from heavy duty mount.

    No power-offs so far.

  • I l have the same issue, I use it on my atv or snowmobile and it shuts down on random. I also have had the unit not charge when it cold out. Apparently they have a heated mount coming out.

  • same problem !

I can see the problem is know almost 2 years ago and there is no fix ?

  • Hi,

First thing: I always use the montana just battery powered , no external source.

Last time I´ve had the issue , was last week. I did a five days trip and it switched off just  three times in the first two days, the first day twice and second day just one Both days it happened after the first hour working +/-. The second time it happened in the first day I could even see what was happening that exact moment .

I was stopped on a route, suddenly as I was in a service road just touching the main motorway I was traveling by, It started to recalculate , suddenly the pink line disapeared it started recalculation and at 6% it switched off. All happened in my hand, so it was the first time I can see it in the right moment it happens.

that was the second time it switched off tha day. The next day it happened once again and for three days more , working 10-12 hours a day it worked perfectly, nothing happened.

I´m conviced that it something related to firmware, because at the begin I had my 700i it worked perfectly and never switched off.

    Thaks

  • It's been long enough it feels like it's not important to Garmin.  This is the first Garmin product I've owned with a problem like this.  They have always taken care of issues with me very timely.  There are enough people with the same problem that if they don't come up with a fix soon someone will probably come up with a class action lawsuit..

  • Mine has been doing this a lot more lately. Twice today, every, err three times (literally happened as I'm typing out this post on the road. I'm wondering if it's related to the explore app connection. First two times it turned off shortly after starting navigation from that app. This is a huge issue for such an expensive device. I have so much invested in Garmin and this is the only device I have issues with, but I also use it daily.

  • As an update to my previous post the Garmin had died to the first location on my current road trip 10+ times. On several of the sub-trips around our first destination all 30min drives or less it had died or froze multiple times during navigation needing a restart and in other cases navigation restarted via the explore app. On the way to our next destination it performed the same dying or freezing during navigation.

This destination is a hunting trip where I was using (trying to use) the device to track my hunting coverage day to day. I was using an ATV and also traveling by foot. Also using my paired Alpha 10 to track my dog. Several times I pulled the device out of and it had crashed. Turning it back on to find that it hadn't been tracking most of my route of the last 3 hours in the woods. The other time I needed it I had ventured away from the ATV working the dog after a bird and had to find my way back to be surprised with a Montana 700i that had crashed and wasn't tracking my location for the last 45 minutes on foot. My dog and I eventually found our way back to the ATV and continued our hut. The next two days I made sure to start tracking on my watch as a fail-safe. I've hunted for years with Garmin devices and never had issues like this. I literally cannot trust this device and loose data that I would love to use toward my future hunts as this device should allow when working properly.

is there any way I can provide debug files or help testing/troubleshooting this issue and work towards resolution. It has this issue pretty much every time I use the device.
