Montana 700i keeps turning off

I have a Montana 700i, actually it's my third unit and second cradle. Just after I bought my new 700i I found that it would randomly turn off. Sometimes this happens after a few hours, other times less than 30 mins. The other day it turned off twice in 30 mins. I have to press and hold the power button to turn it back on. When it restarts it just picks up where it left off. The unit has spent all of it's time so far in the car cradle in the car with the USB cable plugged into the 12v socket adaptor.

The dealer has done all they could by replacing 2 units and the cradle so I've contacted Garmin AU, but that has been a frustrating process and I haven't gotten anywhere except to learn that someone else in Australia has the same fault.

Anyone else got the same issue ?

  • Can you confirm, that Garmin is still working on a fix?

  • Hello, yes we are still working on this. Once we do have a final fix to it I will make sure to post something on here regarding the fix!

  • Thanks eveyone for your comments -  My Garmin is doing the same thing. Hardly used and recently left stranded in the scrub. No use if you can't count on it's reliability. 750i. Wil be following up with Garmin and hopefully can get the problem sorted under warranty. Bought the unit and two mounting brackets and paid to have it set up on both bikes. So $1500 later and t's useless. Called the service number and waited ..... and waited. Ended up having to hang up.

  • Should add it was approx $1500.00 + the labour for installing the mounting brackets on two bikes! Mine is now near three years old and used about 6 times max. I thought I was purchasing a quality product.

So has anyone actually found a solution or had the issue fixed?

  • I have had the same problem on two different units. Been in touch with Garmin. Long time ago I sent them logs. It turns off regardless of power supply, cradle or no cradle. Just leave it on for a while and it will turn off. I even disconnected the internal antenna to test. It seemed to solve the problem,  only using an external antenna. But it ended up that was not the solution either. It still turned off randomly.  Garmin is still selling this product. Always promising this will be fixed. I have given up. I am tired of turning it on and on every time it turns off. I have it mounted in my boat to track. Useless when it randomly turn off.

  • This you have answered now for 2 years. Still no fix. And you still sell this unit without telling customers about this known problem Rolling eyes

  • I've mentioned it before but mine doesn't crash anymore. The screen sometimes refuses to power back on and I have to press the power button like 5 times to get it on but the actual device stays on. (tech support couldn't really help but factory resetting the garmin seemed to make it less likely to happen)

out of curiosity under system - advanced setup -  external power off what is yours set to? for some reason mine was set to turn off when disconnected from external power and i think that was causing some mystery turn offs.

i also notice it regularly crashes when syncing stuff to bluetooth so worth turning that off too.

  • This is just disturbance information. Of course all you mention has been tried.

Mine is never disconnected from any external power. USB or cradle 12V. Doesn't matter. After 3 hrs or 3 days on it turns off. Randomly. Of course the settings you mention is checked.

This is a real problem that many people encounter. Let Garmin fix it.

You should try to turn your unit on, and leave it on for days and see what happens.

  • 2990935 asked if anyone found a solution and those things stopped mine from crashing! though, not really a 'fix' as obviously it shouldn't crash in the first place. using it while it's externally powered causes it to crash right? i just charge mine overnight, or when i've stopped riding. Sorry if this stuff doesn't work for what you're using it for.

i can ride till the battery is almost flat and it doesn't crash, so like 10 hours or so, but got a 5 day trip coming up next week so will see if it remains crash free.
