Montana 700i keeps turning off

I have a Montana 700i, actually it's my third unit and second cradle. Just after I bought my new 700i I found that it would randomly turn off. Sometimes this happens after a few hours, other times less than 30 mins. The other day it turned off twice in 30 mins. I have to press and hold the power button to turn it back on. When it restarts it just picks up where it left off. The unit has spent all of it's time so far in the car cradle in the car with the USB cable plugged into the 12v socket adaptor.

The dealer has done all they could by replacing 2 units and the cradle so I've contacted Garmin AU, but that has been a frustrating process and I haven't gotten anywhere except to learn that someone else in Australia has the same fault.

Anyone else got the same issue ?

  • My device was again replaced last yr (#4) and the mount was also replaced again (#3). Mine is a unit issue - the power cable is plugged directly into the unit. This unit has shut down 4 times since I got it. I was dealing with Andrew. Who do I need to contact now please ?.

  • I just want to ask, are all these people experiencing random and unwanted 'shut downs' able to produce crashlog data from their devices? Do we even know if this is an actual crash, or is the device powering off in a controlled manner when not desired? Many users seem to have resolved the issue by simply configuring the settings to not shut off when external power is lost.

  •  No. This does not ask me if I want to shut down like it was just disconnected from power. It also, on mine, does not care if it is in the cradle or not. But, when I turn it back on, it does almost always continue like it never shut off.

  • Hi Leslie

I have seen other answer from you like this since last 12 months, thanks for been the Vivible Face of Garmin .... but Garmin does not give any solution and does not fiex this problem on the last 12, 24, 36, etc months, it look that Garmin know exactly they have a problem but Garmin either dont care or Garmin can not fix the problem
I have many other devices form Garmin, I love Garmin, but I am very dissaponted with this problem.

    Regards

    Andres

  • I will send you a direct message.

  • I will send you a direct messge.

  • I still have this issue and am waiting for the fix.  I only use the unit in the AMPS mount on my motorcycle so don’t know if it happens to my unit unpowered in use as I can’t securely mount it without.

The issue happens much less frequently when I switch off the InReach tracking functionality - which was a major feature in my choice of unit originally, and I still have to pay a subscription for the service in case I need to communicate in an emergency once out of mobile phone range.  I have also switched to only one satellite system in abid to further cut down the failure based on research and comments by other users with this problem since Garmin’s only office response is - please use with a usb cable.

  • Same problem for me, my unit turns off, FW 15.20, yesterday Hiking, it happened 4 Times, im very disappointed.

  • To reiterate. Two separate problems: shutdown due to power problems with "rugged" mount and problems not related to power.

I think you're just out of luck with the mount. You can use the USB port instead of the mount. It'll probably vibrate out of the port, but...

Nobody knows if the other shutdown problems are hardware, firmware, or a combination.

Garmin is tracking them separately. If you have either problem, OPEN A SUPPORT TICKET.

  • Hi, i dont have a mount, i was Hiking. It’s a Montana 700, without (i)
