Thanks for the great discussion. Please see the following for clarification:
Cool they offer 2 models. Not sure I need voice and images though less than $50 difference. After reviewing the specs, I'll take the voice as appears you can use it separate from a phone as well and in…
I read through the specs for both models and seems you can dictate a message on the plus device alone or with the paired app. For me that is key and boosts utility of the device.

Yes — your assumption is correct. The Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus has a built‑in microphone and speaker, which means you can send voice messages directly from the device itself, without needing to rely on a paired phone app. Garmin Field Mag GearJunkie PR Newswire
| Feature | Mini 2 | Mini 3 Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | Small grayscale | Color touchscreen |
| Messaging | Text only (typed) | Text + voice dictation + photos |

So, the forum participant’s statement you quoted — “you can dictate a message on the plus device alone or with the paired app” — is indeed accurate. The Mini 3 Plus allows standalone voice messaging, which is a significant utility upgrade over the Mini 2.
Would you like me to also map out real-world use cases (like trail running, cycling, or emergency signaling) where standalone voice messaging changes the equation compared to text-only? That could help you pressure-test whether the upgrade is worth it for your daily rhythm.

Use the built-in speaker and microphone on the device or your compatible smartphone paired to the Garmin Messenger app to send a 30-second voice message, no cell coverage needed. You can also read transcribed voice messages on the color display.
Thanks, now I know the extent of its capabilities i can make a more informed decision, I do like it but already have a satellite plb and ais transmitter for diving, I dont really want more stuff if I can avoid but inreach has added dimension of nuanced conversation for less than urgent situations which is v useful, it needs careful consideration.
Ill wait for descent mk4, hopefully not too long, which is likely to have fenix 8 pro specs incl touch screen for typing, before I decide as its likely to cost even more than mk3 and I dont think garmin allow more than one sat comms device per account anyway, at least currently
The basemap will likely be identical to the one installed on all Garmin devices with map capability and will only roughly show major roads and the names of larger cities and country borders. So, no small paths, trails, etc. Here's an image of the map on an M3+ from the Garmin website. The yellow roads are from the basemap. The Garmin website doesn't even specify the device's memory capacity.

Here 2 more shots taken from official Garmin Youtube videos:

Unfortunately, the battery life for the M3+ with a 2-minute interval is not specified here.
I only found this M3+ data sheet for German language.

But the manual has some more detailed battery information:
