Inreach Mini 3+ on Garmin homepage

https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/1756582/pn/010-03387-10/

No Topo maps! Only basemap and navigation via Explore app.

  • I still suspect you can have some access to topo like maps through the + app, the thinking seems to be similar to navionics subscription model though not sure if you retain access to legacy maps or it has to be ongoing subscription to access.  It will have appeal to expedition type groups. Though biggest user base for sos were regular car drivers in their 2025 audit.

I see what garmin are doing here and not bundling maps on such a device is dissapointing, doubtful to save battery, deliberately turning it into an expensive media sharing device with limited satphone capabilities and sos.

I need the sos primarily, the rest not so much.

  • Doesn't having a basemap mean the database structure for topo is there even if not available directly?

Well have to wait and see if someone can drop an open street map file directly to confirm if it works in principle.

  • The Mini 3 Plus, with its microphone, speaker, touchscreen (which can be switched off and operated via buttons only) and larger color display, will be a welcome replacement for my reliable Mini 2. It's great that you can now send and receive voice messages of up to 30 seconds via satellite. The dimensions in the data sheet show that it hasn't become significantly larger or heavier; it's still nice and small and handy. Since the price difference between the Mini 3 and the Mini 3+ is only $50/€50, you should go for the M3+ – especially since three of the four available consumer plans already include a certain number of voice messages/photos (10/25/50), which you would otherwise be paying for even if you only opted for a Mini 3 (without Plus), which doesn't support these features. I was hoping for real maps, but that can be done with my Fenix and/or my Phone/apps and/or a paper map, so not a problem for me.

  • If you need to remain in contact remotely its very good, worth the upgrade but if its just for sos id stick with mini 2

  • Ah, no topos.

Well, at least it can be paired with thr new etrex touch. Oh, wait, it can't.  The etrex touch can't  be paired to any inreach, and the edge computers which can are abysmal for hiking.

Anyway, I am still holding out to see which they will get fixed first: The etrex touch or the h1i plus.

Or maybe I just have to nake do with what I have (edge explore 2 and my phone with osmand) because they can't or won't fix even basic stuff

  • Thanks for the great discussion. Please see the following for clarification:

    • Mapping isn’t able to be installed directly to the device
    • As with other devices, the Mini 3 Series is compatible with the Garmin Explore App
    • The App is used in conjunction with the device
