Micro SD card problems

With software version 8.08 and 9.05 on GPSMAP H1: When the device is powered on, removing or inserting a SD card Topo France Pro V7 causes the message "changing map" to be displayed continuously. Similar behavior occurs with a 128GB Samsung card loaded with other Topo maps. In all cases, the device can only be powered off by pressing and holding the power button for 30 seconds.

  • Is the SD card with the Topo France Pro V7 map an official Garmin SD card? If so I would contact Garmin support because you can expect official Garmin products to be compatible with each other.

As for SD cards you purchased yourself and where you put 3rd party maps on, the H1 is indeed very picky with cards. Some won't work at all, some work only when reinserting them after the unit has been powered on. See this topic for more reports.

As general advice, it's best to format SD cards with the official SD Memory Card Formatter so that they have the correct file system and cluster size.

  • My SD card Topo France Pro V7 is an official Garmin product. Note that this card and Samsung 128GB have no problem when they are introducted in device before powered on. Problems are only when device is already powered on, and since version 8.08 (no problem with 7.07).

  • Let's take a look into this situation for you. Which microSD memory cards and sizes have you tried? Is the card recognized by the computer when inserted in the GPSMAP H1? Has the card been formatted? If so, which format? Does the message "changing map" eventually disappear from the display? Do you have other maps loaded to the microSD card? If so, which other maps do you have loaded?

  • As an official response, your attitude is really disappointing! What I can confirm now is that for this GPSMAP H1 device, it can recognize almost all brands of memory cards with a capacity of 32GB or less, regardless of whether they contain official or third-party maps, and regardless of the format being FAT32 or exFAT. However, as soon as the memory card capacity exceeds 32GB, whether it's 64GB, 128GB or even larger, the device is very likely to fail to recognize it. It's hilarious that this device claims to support up to 1TB memory cards. Didn't you do any tests before launching it to the market? I have two SanDisk memory cards, both 32GB, and they can be recognized whether inserted before or after startup. But for that 128GB card, if inserted before startup, it won't be recognized after startup; if inserted after startup, the device will freeze and I have to long press the power button to force a restart. The issue of the 128GB card causing a freeze when inserted after startup was recognized before the V9.05 firmware update, but after the update to V9.05, it would freeze when inserted after startup. In another thread (forums.garmin.com/.../micro-sd-cards---so-which-ones-actually-do-work ), the bug issue regarding memory card support for the GPSMAP H1 has been discussed for several months. This is the official forum of Garmin, yet there hasn't been a single reply from an official customer service representative? It's really disappointing!

  • While the device does support a wide range of microSD cards, we still ask for details like brand, size, and formatting because issues like this are often tied to specific combinations rather than general compatibility. For example, behavior can differ between 32GB (typically FAT32) and larger cards (exFAT), or even between cards of the same size from different manufacturers.

Gathering that information helps us identify patterns—especially in cases like this where the issue may depend on when the card is inserted or how the device is interacting with it.

If you plug in your device to the computer while the card is still inserted in the device, this can help in determining where the issue lies:

    • Device is seen, but the inserted card isn't: Typically this points to the card reader in the device not functioning and the best option may be to exchange the device. However, it's best to try an alternative card, if possible, to rule that out.
    • Device and inserted card are both seen: Typically this means the device is having trouble interacting with the current card. If possible, try an alternative card to rule that out. You can also try to insert the card after the device is powered on to see if that allows it to work. If that doesn't help, try a reset to see if that will resolve this: How to Reset the GPSMAP H1 or H1i Plus Handheld Devices
  • While I understand the need to gather information to troubleshoot issues, I think in this case there already is a clear pattern where the GPSMAP H1 and H1i Plus simply do not work reliably with all SD cards even though the specs say there are no specific requirements.

I've tried two equal sized cards of different brands and one of them is not recognized when the device is powered on, but only when the SD card is removed and reinserted while the H1 is turned on. Both my Windows PC and MacBook recognize the card perfectly when using a card reader. The other card works without issues with my H1. Others have reported similar issues, see here.

So to me that seems the issue is with the H1, not with card readers and the SD cards themselves. I'd be happy to provide more info if needed.

  • Seems like you guys need to test a variety of cards, with the cards being put in before and after boot and so on. Thus making sure they work as they should (firmware), and then roll out an update.

I think it is telling that a lot of users  report the most difficulty from cards larger than 32 GB - a limit previous Garnin devices of all sorts had.

In other words, this problem seems to be so common, the notion of asking for specifics from users just isn't good enough. Something is wrong on a basic level.

This, as well as the plethora of other bugs is why I ditched the notion of buying the h1i plus/h1/etrex touch. Your response is not helping matters to be frank.

And when you guys then pretend this is a problem with a specific user's settings and what have you, you are deservedly getting confronted with the ire of users.

No amount of user specific details will solve the problem of firmware that is as faulty as it obviously is. These cases are not rare.

It sems like it is vibe-coded by an intern and never even reviewed by anyone who actually knows how to code.

  • I just realised, the firmware for the reader might not be vibe coded after all.

It might just be the same old firmware of yore, copy/pasted onto the new device, and just the actual hardware upgraded, thinking it would solve itself. All this followed by no testing whatsoever, but a shrug and a "that'll do" attitude

It would explain just about everything wrong with the card reader and why it is hit and miss, not just by card or capacity, but from one day to the next.

Garmin really needs to get their act together for people to stay with them. They are not only being nixed by potential buyers because they are an American company, but pushing products that are clearly faulty will make even more people look elsewhere.

    Fiduciary responsibility springs to mind.

  • This, as well as the plethora of other bugs is why I ditched the notion of buying the h1i plus/h1/etrex touch. Your response is not helping matters to be frank.

So you're saying you don't even have a GPSMAP H1/H1i Plus?
