Micro SD cards - so which ones actually do work?

Hello All,

So clearly there is some *very* finicky firmware in these units and getting micro SD cards recognised is complete and utter pot luck!!

I've tried a box fresh Sandisk 512GB Extreme Pro card with zero success, despite formatting it in every format and cluster size known to man. Tried (re)inserting the card with the unit powered off and powered on. Make no odds. Just not recognised at all. Card itself is totally fine and checks out in  ValiDrive et al.

Therefore before I get into testing the other bunch of SD cards I have kicking, I just wanted to ask quickly to save hours of grief...

What micro SD cards actually *do work* with the wonderful firmware Garmin's engineers and software subcontractors have foisted on us ;-) ?

(GPSMAP H1i Plus running v6.04)

Ta much

  • I purchased the SanDisk 128GB Extreme microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card from Amazon and it's been working so far without any issues.

    Hope this help.

  • I had issues with a SanDisk Extreme 128GB microSDXC card. The maps on the card were not recognized after device power on. But after removing and inserting the card again with the device powered on, the card was recognized successfully.

Now I use a 128GB SanDisk High Endurance microSDXC card, and that one is recognized properly. I didn't try other microSD cards.

  • Thanks Jim. I’ve ordered one from Amazon and will give it a go. I’ll try the others I have variously stashed in drones and tablets!

Are you using exFAT or FAT32 format (any particular cluster size)?

…be nice if Garmin gave us a little more useful information, other than cards up to 1TB are compatible….good grief!

    Thank you.

  • I've formatted mine in exFAT (using the defaults of the SD Memory Card Formatter by the SD Association). I think exFAT is even required for microSDXC cards, but not sure if the H1 complies with SD card standards.

  • By way of update I've now trialed the following cards. For fairness all cards have been re-formatted to exFAT using the SD Memory Card Formatter as recommended here by  Pray

    Recognised:

    - Lexar 256GB Silver Plus

    - SanDisk 64GB Ultra

    - SanDisk 128GB High Endurance (new card just received from Amazon, tested straight out of the packet)

    *NOT* recognised:

    - SanDisk 512GB Extreme Pro

    - Samsung 128GB EVO Plus

  • Thanks for this thread, I've been super frustrated. I've been talking with Garmin support for over a month. First they said it's my problem and they had larger cards working, then we exchanged devices and I got a new H1i Plus, and then still those cards I was trying didn't work correctly. I've tried formatting in both FAT32 and exFAT in every single sector size possible. Found some weird behavior, but none of the cards above 32GB worked correctly. They either weren't recognized at all or they only worked if the card was inserted after the device was powered on, it wouldn't be seen if the card was inserted prior to booting the GPS. I finally found one that works, thanks to this thread. Here's what I have tried:
