Getting my course handicap before I play

This may relate to the approach app and the whole gamin approach ecosystem rather an the S70 in particular.

I would like to know my course handicap before I start a round. In the app (not on the website?) I can see what my course handicap was for a round after I play it by going

Scorecards > select a scorecard > kebab menu > scorecard settings

And it displays what my course handicap was for that round after I have played it. I want to know that before I play.

  • Thanks for the finding!

Checked a couple scorecards and my course handicap is all over the place (on the same course  with 3 different 9).
It goes either around 0, 10 or 19 (the latest being the most accurate according to my 18 handicap).

Would be good indeed to be able to check it upfront to correct possible course handicap calculation issue.

  • Yeah the hack workaround could be to record a fake round with fake scores, find your course handicap, then delete the fake round. But there should be a better way than that.

  • What a crazy idea ... if I want to know my course handicap, I search the course via www and check the playing handicap overview from this specific course. The above used method showed me in the app a course handicap of 18, but the overview from this specific course shows me 22 ...

  • May be there's a difference between the www and what the watch is using? Hence the 18 vs 22?
I wish we could see the course slope/rating used by the watch to calculate the course handicap.

  • I think that is too much for the watch ... you have to include the playing handicap tables for round 40.000 golf courses and then different for men and women and  for e.g. first 9 holes, second 9 hole and 18 holes and also for the diff. tees ( white, yellow, blue, red and orange) ...

  • Well no, the watch would get it from the app when you load that course like it gets everything else, or just have it in the app (or the website).

  • That's true but I mean it general to keep these extra data ... and these information is (mostly) available via web and on the golf course

If you have a handicap it mostly differ not so much between the golf courses. For me it's more interesting what isthe layout of the course and if it would be possible to reach my handicap there, so I check the course layout via web, if I know that I have to play on an unknown course ...

  • I use 3 different Apps: Garmin, Golfshot, The Grint and I also have an official Web platform to report rounds for an USGA official handicap:

    Garmin: 19.7
    Golfshot: 17.8
    The Grint: 17.6
    USGA: 18.2

Obviously, none of those 4 handicaps are totally identical because the algorithm is different.
But Garmin is way off, by 2 stokes.

This discrepancy alone make me think that either the slope/rating use by Garmin is completely off, or the handicap algorithm is completely wrong.
I do not think that Garmin ever mentioned that the handicap calculation will follow World Handicap System, but for the price of the watch and Garmin reputation, I would have expected something better (read closer to USGA/WHS handicap calculation).

If Garmin can get access to the Layout of 40.000+ courses, why not get the proper slope/rating for the tee and gender?
And make sure that Handicap calculation follows the WHS as close as possible?

EDIT: my bad, Garmin actually stipulate that the S70 is following the WHS handicap calculation:
    support.garmin.com/.../
So now, I wonder why Garmin Handicap is so much off...

  • I think out of date layouts is part of it. Not saying garmin layouts are out of date, maybe they are or maybe the other ones are.

  • The World Handicap System indeed is used, and then following the info outlined below:
