Does anybody know if there's a protective case for the R50 available?

Garmin or Third Party vendor - anything would be fine

The only option from Garmin is the case included in-box, as the unit is designed to be set up without any additional protective accessories.

that case looks clear so I'm guessing it won't need holes? However, that's way too expensive. I don't think that should cost more than $50. It's just plastic
