Feature request: 4:3 aspect ratio mode for external display.

Many enclosure impact screens are in a 4:3 or more square aspect ratio.  It would be nice to be able to configure the aspect ratio of the external display.

  • As mentioned on the first comment I provided on this thread, the feedback from users requesting aspect ratio configuration on the R50 has passed along.

The reason it image is appearing squished is because the external display you are using needs adjusted per the options available on the specific display. If you are seeing a squished image, then the external display is causing that to occur based on the settings configured.

It is an industry standard for displays capable of connecting to a device via HDMI input to accommodate the full image from the source the image is coming from. The ability to configure different aspect sizes is also true what is typically offered by displays labeled as full, zoom, 4:3, and wide are commonly used for these settings to change the image formatting on that external display. Examples of this are shown in my initial comment to this thread with images.

There is nothing from the Approach R50 that would result in a display distorting on contorting the image differently than how the display built into the R50 presents menus and info on-screen.

If you are unhappy with how the screen is showing on the external display you have HDMI connected to the R50, please contact support for the manufacturer of the display you are using.

Unless any further announcements become available regarding any changes on the R50 resulting from this request...I do not have any further responses or info to provide on this thread going forward.

  • An option of aspect ratios would be amazing I’ve got the AH700ST but it’s not doing the screen fit properly. Do you expect there to be an update with aspect ratios in the future ?

  • On that projector model, the User Manual outlines on page 23 the options for the basic OSD menu has a section specific for "Picture Mode" and "Aspect Ratio" that can be adjusted to allow the configuration you are wanting within the features offered from that projector manufacturer.

Please contact support for the manufacturer of the external display being used if further assistance is needed to get the display configuration you are wanting.

If any new features become available for the R50 related to this topic, I will post at that time if anything new becomes available. In the meantime, please refer to the user manuals specific to your display brand/model, or contact support through the manufacturer of the display for assistance in configuring the image.

  • Please let us know if and when a software update allows for additional aspect ratios. Thank you.

  • Is there anyway to display it in 1:1 if I am using a gaming computer?

I cannot find a way to connect practice to my laptop then to the projector.

I can connect it with GSPro and then show it in their software at 1:1 but that defeat the purpose of getting the R50.

  • Can you show 1:1? I have a BenQ projector that should be able to display 1:1 and the R50 will not allow that output. I've been on the phone with BenQ and they have assured me that while the projector is capable of scaling to 1:1 because the R50's resolution doesn't allow for this without being able to change a setting on the R50 itself that it won't work without being connected a gaming computer and changing the settings on the video card.

  • I want to subscribe to this request as well, please.  As everyone here has been saying, projectors will squish the 16:9 image to make it appear 4:3.  The Garmin R50 needs an option to natively output at 4:3 or else it will be a squished image.

  • The R50 is extending the display signal via HDMI connection to an external source that takes the original image playback and interprets display options per the features on your projector or external display device.

There are not any options from the R50 end to format a ratio at this time.
