R10 distances still way short

Hi all

I have been tinkering with my R10 since the 3.9 update (never worked before that, usual solid green issue on backswing).

I was hitting tentatively into a net at first so didn't really pay much attention to the short yardage.

Yesterday my 3mx3mx3m cage for the garden arrived, so I took the day off today to test properly. My device is level and the bottom of legs are level with the tee mat height wise as advised.

All of my distances are way off, varying from 10 yards on short irons, 15-30 on mid to long irons and 30-50 with driver.

I have experimented with differing device heights and between 5-6 foot from R10 to ball with the distance from ball to net a constant 12 feet. Nothng seems to make a difference.

Being an Android user, I cannot calibrate the device in E6 wwith the altitude setting like this guy does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD_Yol7io9g

Is there anything else I can try?

There seems to be so so many users complaining of this, it cannot all be user error!

I am hoping Garmin will do another update to try and rectify these issues. Or at least a workaround similar to the E6 fix.

Even with these failings I absolutely love the device. The shot shape seems spot on, just the swing speed and therefore distances also.

  • My post above is not intended to place blame, as it outlining factors relevant as to why the distances could be recording at the value seen during sessions, along with important points that should be considered for those having a concern with the distance captured.

We are confident that the Approach R10 will a provide shot data per the accuracy stated on the official site, which can be referenced through the link here if needed: Accuracy of Approach R10 Radar per proper setup, and environmental surroundings conducive for proper capture per the current versions for Approach R10 and for the Garmin Golf app.

R10 users with concerns regarding distance have a multitude of factors that should be considered prior to assuming the R10 is defective, or due to the software...with the Troubleshooting Radar Features of the Approach R10 and Tips for Indoor or Outdoor Approach R10 Placement as a starting point.

If you have considered every suggestion and feel it's just inaccurate by design, inherently faulty in providing accurate distance...or hardware/software related...I hope you have contacted Garmin Support so a golf specialist can gather more info to better determine your specific concern...so more info can be gathered to determine what specifically is causing your concern, and further solutions going forward for you.

  • Realise this is a pretty old chat but I have tried all the suggestions and seem to get good readings outdoors while indoors I am getting readings about 20m short with irons and about 80-100m short with driver. My room is plenty big enough and tried different distances from ball to radar within the recommended distances. Wonder if you have any other suggestions.

  • Garmin, I think the solution is pretty simple..  Create a dedicated setting for golfers to add +/-  yards to total carry distance.  Maybe one for woods and one for Irons..  This algorithm would be in addition too,  and mesh with the elevation settings.

My woods are consistently short 20-40 yards,  Irons are short 10-20 yards.. I agree that environmental variations will cause skewed results( concrete floors, fans, garages, basement, etc...)  with the Doppler technology.  But you cannot control where/how people set up their sim. I think the R10 does a good job with many of the data attributes. I get a lot of good data that has improved my game.    But when I want to relax and enjoy a sim round on HTH, E6, etc...  I'm often frustrated with the carry distances being 20-40 yard short.  I know my courses, I know my clubs, and I know my distances when I hit a good shot.  I should be able to adjust the Garmin Golf App to match or get close those distances.  Tweaking the elevation alone does not work well for me. I've read all the reviews, watched countless videos, I've tried everything.

I'm looking for a distance over-ride setting when my surroundings is not conducive to the perfect environment. Please consider a FW update to include this carry distance over-ride.

I had to cancel my HTH & E6 subscriptions because I'm not able to use the same/similar clubs that I normal use on my local courses to enjoy a more realistic round.  It's a shame...

I'm not asking that this +/- carry distance setting be default setting, rather an option.

Thank you for listening  (hoping someone is listening... ;) )

  • I asked for this 2 years ago.

So I would not be too optimistic.

Buy the R50 would probably be the answer now Slight smile

That being said, my distances now is pretty much spot on with my real life play.

But I'm not a long hitter, driver chs 90 on a good day, and I believe this is worse for long hitters.

Ball speed and spin is what I would compare with another lm if possible.

It may be that Garmin is overestimating backspin, so a RCT ball would maybe help.

Forgot to mention that my distances is based on GSPro.I have not used the Garmin Golf app for quite a while, so not even sure what my distances is there arm.
