R10 distances seem off.

I have been using the R10 for a couple days now and my distances seems way off. Seems very club is approx 20yards short from the range? Is there anything that needs to be done with calibration?

  • Unfortunately the internet is awash with rumours and conspiracy theories. I could say that I heard there's an R11 coming out soon- just made that up BTW.

I'll come back later this week with a quick check against a Skytrak.

The reviews I've seen generally don't have a 'busy' environment. I've got metal racking in my garage loaded with various junk- is it affecting the radar- who knows. Concrete floors with some old carpet on etc.

I think what Garmin (or someone else) really need to do is make a budget optical based launch monitor. The Skytrak has been out for years without any real competition.

  • I think Garmin do want to get it right and will. It's just a shame the Garmin representative on these forums no matter how many times they are tagged never make any comment on the subject.

  • No, that was not Tantrumus, that was me, and you're right, my mistake, I meant the regular Mevo that's $500.

  • I read few posts from yesterday on the GolfWrx forum where a user mentioned that Garmin told them to expect a software update end of october which will have a calibration option...

"He said they are planning on releasing a self calibration function on the Garmin app before the end of October."

  • Great, it's a good start (if true).  Hopefully, stats from range sessions will make it to the "my bag" page of the software so we can map our bags.  For me, it's one of the main reason I bought the unit.

  • Self calibration defeats the purpose. It should be a device that calibrates you. Have Garmin had anything to say about this?

  • Yeah, that seems like a problematic solution.

  • i think they may have separate algorithms for indoor and outdoor modes. Its ok to have a certain extent of self calibration i think. Just as an example, on my old P3pro Swing sim, the asked for user inputs on multiple metrics like club lofts, bounce etc and also asked what your typical max clubhead speed and max distance was. That way it calibrates the shots you hit subsequently and is more realistic... They also had a default option if you didn't want to customize..

  • The other thing the Mevo had while I had it was setting your Sea Level.  It could be set +/- 3000ft.    I never messed with that.

  • Something magical happened today and I am now getting very accurate results from my R10 when hitting into a net. I don't think I've changed anything so it's a total mystery.

    Distance tee to net: 10'

    Distance to tee: 7'

Unit tripod base approximately same height as mat

Garmin Golf app on iPad mini. Version 2.1.0.27

GCS Version: 3.9  (from App Diagnostics menu)

    Approach version 3.60

For me, my distances were low by 1-2 clubs. If the distances displayed were in meters instead of yards, they would have been spot-on. If everybody was experiencing the same thing, I'd guess that they simply had a unit conversion error. However, since so many people have reported radically low distances, there's undoubtedly something else going on.

All that said, I just can't understand how, when nothing changed from day to day, the numbers could suddenly be accurate unless they sneaked a configuration file update or something that doesn't show up in the software or firmware version numbers.
