R10 distances seem off.

I have been using the R10 for a couple days now and my distances seems way off. Seems very club is approx 20yards short from the range? Is there anything that needs to be done with calibration?

  • Thank you for the trackman info.  However, this is missing the point.  I know I am not a very good golfer, I have no delusions of going pro, or even reaching scratch level in a few years.

Tantrumus' gripe is valid.  We all got YouTubed into this unit being very accurate and worth $100 more than the Rapsodo or Mevo+.

From my visually observed hits on the range, the unit is not performing to the error tolerances stated by Garmin or from the gleeful salesmen on the various YouTube early looks.  Go look at all my notes & postings.

Let me give you an example, I drill a drive on the screws that I measured with field markers and a laser range finder to a 250 carry, dead straight, on target.  The unit said it was a 235 carry and 35 yards off center.  This happened often.  Some hits were way off in either direction, a 10 yard right of center hit was measured by the unit as a 25 yard left of center hit.  If I hit into a net at home, how am I supposed to trust the unit if I can't actually see the full ball flight.

It's nice to see what Rory & Brooks can do, but it has no relevance to how this unit is performing.  Will this unit magically become accurate if Rory or Brooks steps up to the tee on the Garmin?  Sorry for the sarcasm, but I hope you get my point.

Also, perhaps it was unintentional, but your comment to Tantrumus and everyone here, "I think we need to be realistic about our swings and consider that we’re not as good as we think" - comes off as insulting.

  • There is a middle ground here gents.

I play club golf every weekend with players that range from low single digits to the high twenties. I can pretty much guarantee that the only shots I see off the back of the green got there because they were thinned.

The vast majority of golfers think they hit their best yardage every shot that gets airborne despite the overwhelming proof from shot-scope, Garmin watches and all the other trackers that show time and time again balls landing short.

There are definitely shots that the Garmin R10 isn't tuned for yet, and maybe won't ever be. Especially 160mph up.

But a lot of golfers could do much worse than pacing off their 10 7iron shots and admitting they don't always carry 160 and the unit is possibly a lot closer than they think.

  • Totally agree most golfers estimate their clubs go longer than they actual do. My only problem with the R10 is launch angle is low which means the ball doesn't carry as long. Secondly a poor shot seems to be overly poor on the R10.

  • I agree with some of the above statements that people's ideas of how far they hit their clubs can be a bit exaggerated. Most of us here won't be hitting every shot great and the distances will vary.

That being said, i do believe it is still getting shots short. Probably due to a width of room issue. All of the guys on YouTube seem to have rather large indoor areas, as they are using in professional studios.

I like to gauge the distance problem just from one club. I have my favourite club that I know I hit well and know exactly how far I hit. That being my 8 iron, which I hit 150 yards on a range (as I aim for the 150 yard marker and carry it that far by hitting it) with a relaxed swing. If I go 100% it can carry 160-165 but it's inconsistent so I never try to swing like that.

I am getting 145-150 yard carry on my 8 iron with a 100% swing. And with my normal swing around 135. So it is definately short.

Ive played my home club a few times on HTH and on the first hole it is 155 yards to the center of the green. I made it to the front edge of the green by swinging 100%. I then played Sunday just gone, took out my 8 iron and because I thought to swing it 100% I end D up 15 yards over the back of the green. For practice purposes, you cannot practice your distances with the R10 as it will actually cause you to second guess yourself on the course.

I'm hoping that Garmin sort out a indoor setting for the R10 which adds a % distance to your shots. As I really don't like swinging really hard to get normal distances as it's not realistic and hurtmy back Rofl

It's at least as accurate as those devices. Since 3.60 came out, no reviewer or independent 3rd party or customer has posted a video of the R10 coming up short against any other launch monitor, or lasered driving range/course carry distances. The people here who think they are short, and put their unit up against another launch monitor, find the launch monitors agree with each other.

So far, only people who do not put it up against another launch monitor think it's the device.

You can have indoor swing syndrome hitting into a net outdoors. A golfer can look into a net and not imagine a driving range and under-swing. I personally did this.

Based on video reviews, there appear to be three things that the R10 struggles with, but it's not distance.

People who are reporting bad shots with carry distance fall into three categories:

    1. People with bad units. There is nothing for support to do but swap them out.

    2. People who can't accept their unit is fine. They should sell or return their units while they're still going for over retail on eBay.

    3. People who find carry distance accurate, but other features sufficiently poor with spin/club path to want to see improvements.

Also, perhaps it was unintentional, but your comment to Tantrumus and everyone here, "I think we need to be realistic about our swings and consider that we’re not as good as we think" - comes off as insulting.

He's being tactful, but at this point if carry distances were consistently short on a 3.60 unit I think somebody who post it. Accept the challenge!

  • I personally would like to see a review from someone not in a proffessional studio that is massively spacious.

I do however need to check using mine outdoors into a net as I haven't done this. I'm going to try it asap with same distances to net and device etc as I use indoors. I'll report back my findings.

This is about as narrow as you can get and still swing a club:

    www.youtube.com/watch

Here's a round with this setup.

    www.youtube.com/watch

edit: second link went wrong place before, edited it to correct one.

  • That room is about 15 foot wide in the second video

  • I put the wrong link in, it was supposed to be a guy playing with that narrow setup where there's clubs/items to the right and a vehicle to the left. It is now correct but here it is as well.

  • I'm sure people think they hit further than they actually do but I know I hit more than 210 on average off the tee.  I went to the range and tested and got the same 210 average while I watched the ball carry over the 235 sign with dead ass range balls, I mean these things were cannon balls from the 80s.  There is something not quite right. It seems to get worse the longer the club is  I can hit my 3w 250 at times.  So I'm being generous I just want some 270 hits not 300 just 250 to 270.  I'm talking total distance here I get 210 total distance shots with the r10 the longest it has ever given me is 258 w/  230 carry.
