Sensor pairing (CIQ System 8) does not work on Fenix 7

According to the release notes, the Fenix 7 supports CIQ System 8 starting from version 20.16 (https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-7-series/403727/fenix-7-fenix-7-pro-system-software-20-16).

However, when installing a data field that uses sensor pairing ([https://developer.garmin.com/connect-iq/core-topics/pairing-wireless-devices/), the user is not prompted to pair the sensor. This functionality works correctly on Edge 1040.

In addition, the Connect IQ category is missing from the Sensors menu on the Fenix 7, which means it is not possible to manually pair the sensor after installing the data field. Using the Search All option also does not trigger the pairing (AppBase.getSensorDelegate() is never called).

It appears that sensor pairing support is not available on the Fenix 7. However, based on the SensorDelegate API documentation, this feature should be supported on this device.

Fenix 7 firmware version: 21.19

  • After additional testing, I was able to make the sensors appear by using the "Search All" option, but only when I sideload the data field (built for the Fenix 7 and manually copied the .prg file into the Apps directory). However, when using the version of the data field uploaded to the Garmin Store (same code), the sensors do not appear.

I have two copies of the data field with the same code (Smart Bike Lights & Smart Bike Lights #2), but the sensors fail to appear for either of them when installed from the store. Interestingly, when testing the same data fields on the Edge 1040, the sensors appear as expected.

  • I tried this on a Fenix 7 and can see that it doesn't bring up the "datafield installed" popup which should lead you to a setup sensors view.

However, I was able to pair the CIQ sensor from the search all option and have them appear. This is how the Fenix 7, Fenix 8 and Forerunners work. I believe it is only the edges that have a specific Connect IQ category in the sensors menu.
