Make the middle button on a Venu 3 available to CIQ SDK apps

Currently, our apps developed with the Connect IQ SDK can't make use of the middle button on Venu 3 devices.

I propose to make this button available to Connect IQ apps just like the top and bottom buttons are.

This would grant us so many new possibilities, such as making apps that can be controlled entirely using the buttons (UP - SELECT - DOWN and a menu system).

I hope this will be implemented as not being able to use that third button just seems like so much wasted potential...

Thanks in advance

  • I have noticed that Fenix 8 users are complaining that the UI has changed so that some features work better with touch [*], so maybe Garmin doesn't see 5-button watches the same way I do.

[*] e.g. apparently when you edit the weight for a strength set on Fenix 8, the UI now shows a numeric keypad. (Not sure what happens if touch is disabled).

Personally I wish Garmin would add more features in the UI of 5-button watches which take advantage of touch (but which don't necessarily force you to use it).

For example, the UI of Spotify and the built-in music player on 5-button watches (at least around the FR955/FR965 generation) is optimized for button use: nothing more and nothing less. This means that a lot of very common actions, like going to the previous track, are very awkward, whether you use buttons or touch.

What I would like to see is some support for *optional* touch-only gestures in the music player for 5-button watches, so that if you choose to use touch, you can access a few things more conveniently.
