The gesture doesn't switch the light on

This doesn't really make sense, speaking of logic.

"Gesture only turns on the light" != "Only the gesture turns on the light".

The fact that the only function of the gesture is to turn on the light has no bearing on the fact that you can also turn the light on with the Light button.

Did you really mean to say:

"If [supposedly] only the gesture turns on the light, why is it possible to turn on the light with the button?"

That would make sense, except nobody said "only the gesture turns on the light" (and ofc it wouldn't be true if they said that).
