FW 20.75+ has fixes to backgrounding for Fenix 6 devices.

Fenix 6 with background app watchface doesn't update

A user has reported my watchface doesn't work with his Fenix 6 but does with his Vivoactive 3. So, he's been helping me debug it a bit and it appears that after the background process (which does a webRequest) calls Background.exit(data), the app's onBackgroundData() method isn't called, until something else, like a smart notification, happens on the watch.

He sees the same behavior with both firmware 9.0 and 10.10 on the Fenix 6. I don't see this problem on the simulator and this is the first report I've received about it.

  • Any news how to overcome this problem? Just got my Fenix6 and all my watchfaces stopped to work with background requests automatically. They update only if a message or notification comes thru and you return to watchface, just as described here.

  • I'm also experiencing this issue with a Fenix 6. Background processes update the watchface (for weather or other requests) on my wife's Garmin 645 (linked to my phone), but not on the Fenix 6. This makes the watch completely unusable for me as I use a watchface to display my blood sugar from xdrip+.

All xdrip+ compatible watchfaces work perfectly on the Forerunner 645, but not the Fenix 6....using the same mobile phone.

  • Garmin, is there any update here? Have received another report of the problem, but I don't have a Fenix 6 so can't debug any further. I'm considering removing Fenix 6 from my supported devices list, especially without hearing anything from Garmin about looking into the problem.

  • I just can add, that I got some (a hand full) reports and ratings from users who claim that my watch face Alfa-Zulu stopped updating weather data from openweathermap.org.

It seems it started about a month ago. Alfa-Zulu code did not change since end of August. I doubt it is a coding problem, It has nearly 60k downloads and surely a couple of thousand active users. If it was a coding problem I assume I'd receive a lot more reports.

Must be a rare problem. I can not reproduce. On my fenix 6 pro and forerunner 645 everything works fine.

I have no time to investigate further.

To be honest, I am sick of being beta tester for Garmins crappy software.

  • (In case that link doesn’t work for you, somebody lists 6 high profile, respected, watch faces that have been on Garmin for a while that all fail to update weather.)
