Edge x40 series - GPS track stops recording during an activity when a CIQ app is displayed.

With the x40 series of Edge devices, it is no longer possible to launch a CIQ app from the widget loop.  The only option is to return to the home screen and launch a CIQ app from either a glance, if supported, or from the CIQ menu.

When the CIQ app is launched, the GPS recording stops creating missing segments in the activity GPS track for the duration that the CIQ app is running.  I can reproduce this on my Edge 1040 running Beta FW 18.15.

This appears to be the exact same behavior that has been fixed on the Fenix 7 and Epix devices starting with FW 13.13.  Reference Ticket TREES-6206 and the following bug report.

Steps to reproduce on an Edge 1040 with Betw FW 18.15:

  1. Install Weather Radar App on the Edge.  Trial is fine to reproduce the issue
  2. Start recording an activity.
  3. After traveling some distance from the start, keep the activity running but return to the home page and launch the Radar app from the glance view.
  4. Keep moving while you run the radar app so that you are not in the same place when you first started the app or the activity
  5. The radar app will start GPS and will take 10-15 seconds to find your location.
  6. The app will try to download the image for your location.  It will hang here and not complete the download.  (This is a different bug)
  7. Keep riding.
  8. Exit the radar app and return to the activity
  9. The edge will alert that GPS is ready.
  10. Check the GPS track on the map page, you will see a straight line between the points where the CIQ app was launched and ended.
