Summary:
- Device: Garmin Edge 850
- Firmware: 32.20
- App Type: Connect IQ DataField
- Issue: The device immediately crashes and reboots when tapping a data field in screen edit mode if the installed DataField declares both Ant and BluetoothLowEnergy permissions.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create and build a Connect IQ DataField app with both Ant and BluetoothLowEnergy permissions enabled in manifest.xml:
<iq:permissions>
<iq:uses-permission id="Ant"/>
<iq:uses-permission id="BluetoothLowEnergy"/>
</iq:permissions>
2. Install the PRG on Garmin Edge 850 running FW 32.20.
3. Add the DataField to any data screen in an activity profile.
4. Enter screen edit mode (e.g., long-press or enter layout edit mode).
5. Tap on the data field to change or select a new field.
Observed Behavior:
- The screen freezes momentarily and the device immediately reboots (the Garmin logo appears).
- The crash occurs at the firmware level. In the device event log (000004D0.TXT), multiple unexpected reboot events are logged (entries marked with '?' at cycle counters C:1942, C:1943, C:1946, C:1949, etc.).
Expected Behavior:
- The data field configuration/category selection menu should open normally without crashing the device.
Isolation & Debugging Tests Done:
1. Permission isolation:
- Removing BluetoothLowEnergy while keeping Ant -> No crash (works completely fine).
- Removing Ant while keeping BluetoothLowEnergy -> No crash.
- Only when both permissions are declared together does the crash happen.
2. Logic isolation:
- Stripped all background scanning, BLE registration, and ANT channel allocation down to a bare-bones UI skeleton. The crash still reliably occurred upon tapping in edit mode simply by having both permissions declared in manifest.xml.
3. Firmware / Device comparison:
- The exact same codebase works without issues on other devices (e.g., Edge 830) and worked on earlier firmware. This appears to be a regression introduced in Edge 850 FW 32.20 during the edit-mode data field context switch.
