CIQ apps unable to download images with makeImageRequest when launched while a native activity is recording on CIQ 4.x devices

The bug seems to be limited to devices that support CIQ 4.x and above.  CIQ apps that make use of the makeImageRequest method are unable to receive an image download if the app is launched while a native activity is recording.  If the same app is called from the glance view or the app menu without an activity being recorded, the app is able to download and display images.  So far I have been able to reproduce this behavior on the following devices.

Edge 1040 FW Beta 18.15

Fenix 7, Beta FW 14.27

I have had reports on the same behavior with the Weather Radar App on Epix, Epix Pro and Edge 840 users.

Link to Weather Radar App: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/bddf48af-bbdb-425c-bc7f-34309e529a2e

Steps to reproduce on Edge or Watch device:

  1. Install Weather Radar App
  2. Start recording activity.  Walk, Run, Bike ride, etc
  3. Use hot key to enter widget loop or on edge return to home screen.
  4. Launch the radar app from the Glance view
  5. Radar app will hang indefinitely at the retrieving image screen.  Normal download is 10-20 seconds.  After 2-3 minutes exit the radar app.
  6. End the activity recording
  7. Launch radar app again from the Glance view.
  8. Map/radar Images will download and display on the device.

In my own testing I can see the image request making it to the server, but it acts like the callback method never gets called when an activity is being recorded in the background.

  • What is the status Garmin on this bug?  It was fixed 6-7 months ago on most, but not all devices (eg still occurs on Venu 2).

  • Just got the next beta for my F7 today and it looks like this bug is fixed in FW 18.09.  So it is definitely requires a FW update to be fixed.

  • Just heard back from my Edge 540 user.  Apparently yesterday they got an update but it was not 23.09.  Today they got another update and this bug seems to be fixed for them now too.  Relaxed

  • I don't think this fix is anything you can compile into the app, but has to be implemented in the device FW.  So it will take time for the fix to be rolled into each device, likely in the next quarterly beta.  I have been exchanging emails with one user who has a Edge 540.  They installed the latest beta 23.09 and still see the image hang while an activity is active, but the same version on the Edge 1040,it appears to work, checked on two different devices.  So I can only guess that the fix has not be fully rolled in to all devices yet.

  • That is good news, or at least it sounds promising.  I just tested a 7.2.0 build on my Forerunner 255 with firmware 19.18 and it still occurs, but hopefully there's new firmware coming soon to the watches with the fix.  Thanks!
