Bug. Instinct 2x. ConnectIQ memory allocation. FW 14.12

The Instinct 2X only makes 96kB of memory available to each Connect IQ app. That means that applications or some of the features of the applications that need the 2.x version of Garmin Connect IQ that need to allocate 128kB of memory to each application, do not work.

It also happens that as a developer, I have seen applications that need more than those 96kb limit during the running period, crashing eventually with Out Of Memory errors and even crashing the watch.

Having this limit in Firmware does not have any sense at all and that 96kb limit should be removed or increased at least at 128kb. I report this as a bug because that 96kb limitation breaks compatability, does not have sense and should not exist.

I mean, we are crashing prematurely because of that limit and this watch is pretty new with the same amount of RAM as the FR935, which does not have this limit. So, at the end, this is a bad experience to the user and bad for Garmin then. It is just to correct that memory limit. This bug should be fixed.

Thanks

  • Jim, not. It is a completely updated device with many many more features.

It has even multiband GPS (normal Fenix 7 does not, only the 7X and PRO versions) and many many more things. It is basically a Fenix 7 without maps, Stamina, ClimbPRO, SatIQ and a monocrome screen (which maximizes battery and increases readability under direct sunlight)

But this does not happen only with Instinct devices. Inside the Fenix family, the 7X is a completely different device than the non 7X. It has flashlight and a completely new multiband GPS chipset.  And the PRO versions do have even a new HR sensor.

The Instinct 2X is like a PRO version of the Instinct Series.

Updated to 2023, more accurate with the multiband GPS chipset, a lot of more of battery life, doubled ram, better screen (not only bigger, but contrast and backlight) and many things like flashlight/torch, both white and red light, plus strobe options (like Fenix 7X or Enduro 2 series), added Training Readiness suite of metrics (like Fenix 7 series), added solar lux hour tracking metric (like Fenix 7 series), added Morning Report (like other Garmin watches), adding obstacle course racing activity profile in near-term update (like Fenix 7 series), added Boxing and MMA Activity Profiles,....

It is a completely new watch and much much better than those you are talking that have 2 or more years old, of course.

As I'm saying this is a new watch that does not have anything in common with the old watches. Is like comparing an FR935 with an FR955. Both are Forerunners, of course. But the last one has more memory, multiband GPS and maps.
