App Store Issue Affecting App Purchases on Garmin Fenix 6 Models

Users are experiencing an issue when attempting to purchase the paid version of the Shot Clock app on Garmin Fenix 6 and Fenix 6 Sapphire models. When trying to download the app from the Garmin App Store, they receive an error message stating: “This app requires an update of your Fenix 6. Please use Garmin Express to update your Fenix 6.” However, after following the instructions and connecting their devices to Garmin Express, no updates are available. All affected devices are running firmware version 27.00, which is the latest version.

The paid version of Shot Clock can be accessed here: Paid App. In contrast, the trial version of Shot Clock — available at Trial App — can be downloaded, installed, and run without any issues. The primary difference between these versions is the code indicating trial status, which suggests that the problem may lie with the App Store configuration rather than the app itself.

Notably, this issue has only been seen on the Garmin Fenix 6 and Fenix 6 Sapphire models; the Fenix 6 PRO models are unaffected. The app’s manifest file targets API level 3.4.0, which is correct for the Fenix 6 series, further indicating that the problem likely stems from the App Store’s configuration or its compatibility checks.

Can you investigate the App Store configuration to resolve the error preventing the purchase and download of Shot Clock on the affected models? Given the nature of the problem, this may indicate a broader issue potentially affecting other developers and apps on the Garmin App Store. A screenshot of the error message from the Garmin App Store is attached for reference.

  • > But besides the arguably not very well listed supported devices, the error message doesn't make sense either, because it hints that the app is installable on the device with a newer firmware version, when both of these are incorrect (there isn't a newer FW version and the app is not installable on fenix6)

Agreed. The error message is bad (misleading) and the list of supported devices is ambiguous / unclear.

For example, the supported products table contains these items (among others):

    - fēnix® 6/6s/6x Pro

    - Venu® Sq. 2/Sq. 2 Music

If we are to understand that fēnix® 6/6s/6x Pro should expand to fēnix® 6 Pro, fēnix® 6s Pro, and fēnix® 6x Pro, then by the same logic, Venu® Sq. 2/Sq. 2 Music should expand to Venu® Sq. 2 Music and Venu® Sq. 2 Music, which is clearly wrong.

OTOH, if we use the rule that Venu® Sq. 2/Sq. 2 Music expands to Venu® Sq. 2 and Venu® Sq. 2 Music, then by the same logic, fēnix® 6/6s/6x Pro should expand to fēnix® 6, fēnix®  6s, and fēnix® 6x Pro.

Yes, in this case it's reasonable to infer that fēnix® 6/6s/6x Pro should expand to fēnix® 6 Pro, fēnix® 6s Pro, and fēnix® 6x Pro, as opposed to fēnix® 6, fēnix®  6s, and fēnix® 6x Pro (for obvious reasons).

But I'll be honest and say that I thought fenix 6, 6s and 6x (non-pro) were all supported for monetization, based on a quick glance at the supported products table.

IOW there's no consistent logic here, you're just supposed to "know" or "figure out" what Garmin *really* means, based on what you already know about Garmin's various naming / product schemes.

This is not the first time we've been in this situation. Anyone remember System 4/5/6? Especially when System 6 came out, and people said "well, the Garmin System scheme may be confusing to *you* but *I* understand it", and the same people turned out to be wrong about the definition of System 6? Well, guess what. Even in 2024, many bloggers and end users still have no idea what System 6 is.

Maybe instead of cutting corners / saving keystrokes when it comes to documentation and technical writing, things could be written out fully so there's no ambiguity.
