I can only report this for the Android application.
There is a disconnect between the format set on the device and the one reported in Activity apps, in which the Activity and its widgets are always reporting in American units. For example, with my device (Instinct 2) and Connect app set to metric, a Hike widget will always report distance in miles and speed in mph.
