955 incorrectly categorises runs

For some reason, my 955 is ignoring the manually entered heart rate zones that I create to match my physiology. This manifests in all runs being catgorised incorrectly. For example, a Zone 2 Base run that is very definietly a low aerobic effort becomes categorised as a Tempo run. This also happens with Tempo runs being categorised as VO2 Max.

I had thought the issue was with runs that are 99% Z2 with 1% Z3 causing the entire run to be incorrectly categorised, but this isnt the case. A 100% Z2 run with a max HR inside Z2 often gets categorised as Tempo.

The knock on effect is that the entire training readiness and VO2 Max predictor seems to be wrong. Nearly all my efforts are classified as high aerobic, therefore the training status says 'low aerobic shortage'. I am apparently 'Maintaining' fitness with a stable VO2 Max, when in reality, my tune up runs have showed significant gains which allude to the race predictor being a lagging indicator, telling me what I might have achieved a month in the past.

The training load, training status and VO2 Max based race predictor are so inaccurate that I have to ignore them. This is a real shame as these could be awesome tools, if they worked accurately.

  • Hi, can you send me an activity file or two from your device where the training effect was incorrect please?

  • Does this specifically have to do with a Connect IQ app, or is this a general observation about any activity recording on the 955?

  • looking at the HR calculations, the only way garmin could get the categorisation so wrong is if the calculations they use ignore all settings for HR, and default to 220-age as max. That is literally the only way it could have triggered a tempo run to be recorded.

If that is the case, I will have to lie about my age to make it work :)

  • 185BPM.

However, if its based on max HR then it is unfortunately not good enough. I have a low resting heart rate, which %HR zones do not work for. I use the karvonan method which takes into account your max - resting HR as your available capacity:

Exercise HR = [% target exercise intensity x (HR max – HR rest)] + HR rest

There are definitely bugs in the 955 software re heart rate. I have just tried adding a new running heart rate zone and it kept defaulting to garmins %MaxHR amount for each zone, even though I had selected 'based on BPM'. I have also observed the heart rate setting automatically switching from 'Based on BPM' back to the default '%MaxHR' setting.

    It's just buggy....

Maybe the way to get a sensible set of zones across Z2, Z3, Z4 is to set the max HR to something very high, like 200 bpm.

  • What is the HR max (or the z5max) in the watch? And what is the max hr of the activity?

I think that the categorization might not be based on the zones, only on the maxHR setting.
