WatchApp: Rowing Pace

Please use this thread to report any issues or problems you are having with the application.

App: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/4df70520-6d7f-4ceb-929a-bf610c4303e6

DESCRIPTION:

Application which displays information about a given rowing pace.

FEATURES:

- displays information about different distances and times for a given pace
- displays the average wattage for a given pace
- displays estimated calorie expenditure

CALORIES NOTE:

The calorie numbers are based on formulas provided for the Concept2 indoor rower. This calculation is only an ESTIMATE and is assumed that a consistent pace is rowed throughout the workout. The calories burned uses the weight from the user profile to estimate true calorie use.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Set the desired pace : hold menu and enter a desired pace/500m
2. Select START/ENTER to view pace information for pre-determined distances and times (scroll through using UP/DOWN)

NOTICE:

This application was tested on a fenix 3 using firmware version 3.10.

CHANGE LOG:

Version 1.0.1:
- added calorie use estimates

Version 1.0.0:
- initial release

How does this app work? Does it collect Ant+ data from a rowing computer?
  • How does this app work? Does it collect Ant+ data from a rowing computer?

The data is generated using a mathematical equation. I have been looking at a ANT+FE application to connect to a C2 PM4/5 but haven't really gotten started and would still need to determine if it can be done given the current framework provided. It should be noted, even if the connection can be made and the data retrieved, the framework in its current state doesn't allow it to be recorded within a FIT file at this point.
  • Ray Maker (dcrainmaker.com) told me that there was an app in the validation process that would allow to get the data from any fitness item like it used to be with the former garmin watch.

Is this a Garmin or someone working with Garmin produced application? It would be great to see the functionality restored but without a new SDK allowing FIT data session injection or Garmin producing it, I am not sure how it would work. Is there a web resource that discusses it?
  • Very good idea to develop an app for rowing - congratulation!

Many rowers are interested to see the "stroke-rate" in relation to the pace/500m.
The wach is able to count the stroke-rate using the acceleration-sensor. You can use the stroke-rate of the swimming-activity.
Is it possible to use the acceleration-sensor while the gps is enabled?

    Thank you
    Christian

    Vote +=1 for that functionnality
  • This application won't track an actual rowing activity, that is not it's purpose. If someone would be willing to give me a FIT file recorded while rowing OTW in run activity and one in swim activity I can see about creating a data field. No promises but willing to review it and see.

I'm curious about this app as well, being a rower. So:

    1. When you say it won't record an actual rowing activity, you mean it's not meant to track on the water rowing? So it's only meant for an indoor rower?
    2. How is it generating split data (since you're saying it's not just getting it from the Concept2, the way I could with my old Forerunner? The 610, I think it was?)

I've been dreaming of a GPS watch that would properly track outdoor rowing for a long time ... all I'd really want is 500m split time (because that's how rowers think,) distances in meters, stroke rate and heart rate. It would be even better if I had a device that could do that AND would like up with my Concept2 the way my 610 did, so I could have all my rowing data in one place. If I could do those things with a Fenix 3 I would probably buy one.

The application doesn't provide any sort of real-time feedback while rowing either OTW or ERG. It is specifically designed to replicate a pace chart on the watch. The calculations are specific to the Concept 2 rowing machines published formulas and therefore the wattage and estimated calorie expenditure are specific to the C2 indoor rower. The pace fields should all be mathematically correct but that would be the extent it is valid for OTW rowing since a lot more goes into the calculations that would make it valid. Hope that helps.

Hi there I'm looking to purchase a fenix 3 but my main exercise is on the concept2 so I've found this thread and wondered what progress was made in a ant+ connection to the erg monitor? currently use 910xt for this and previously the 310xt
