Maybe the watch face hasn't acquired your position yet. Go outside, start a walk activity,  wait for green gps, return to the watch face. 

Vivoactiv 6. Altitude setting typically stuck on 0, occasionally shows accurate elevation. Is this a known issue?

It may be related to losing gps signal cached data. Does altitude return if you go to an activity, wait for green gps and return to the watch face?

That must be it. Just gps linked on a hike activity (without actually starting it) and got a good elevation reading.

On my old vivoactiv 4 sometime elevation would be stale but never really zero.
