SkyChart is a location- and time-accurate sky chart application for round, Garmin Connect IQ 2.3 or later devices (just the Fenix 5 series for now). It uses your current GPS position and time to display the night sky, featuring 127 of the brightest named stars, the constellation outlines, the sun, moon with accurate phase, Venus (violet), Mars (red), Jupiter (green), Saturn (yellow), and Uranus (blue), as well as the 40 brightest deep sky objects.
Use the Up and Down buttons to show labels for constellations (as abbreviations), the planets, and the catalog number of the deep sky objects.
Use Garmin Connect (instructions: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/developers/connect-iq/connect-iq-showcase/115055-how-to-app-settings) to choose these preferences:
- Auto refresh every five seconds (start / stop with activity [red] button)
- Use the current compass heading when refreshing (North will always be up on the initial load of the app)
- Flip East and West as traditional star charts do
- Draw the planets
- Draw Constellations
- Use the last captured GPS location (will update when GPS gets a fix)
Note that the first execution requires a GPS fix that may take a while. To ensure it loads, record a GPS activity at your location.
Known issues:
- Refreshing is slow as the whole screen has to be redrawn
- Refreshing can be interrupted if incomplete by using the buttons
- Labels can be unreadable for objects that are close together, depending on the current compass orientation
Unfortunately, I'm up against several device limits and use 2.3 features, so porting to older devices may not be possible
