Data Field: Fat Burner

The Fat Burner is a simple datafield which fulfills a user request from Susun.

Connect IQ App Store Link: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/7...2-20971e02898b

This field calculates the fat calories burned depending on heart rate zone & calories:
  • Z1: 9kcal burned = 1 gram of fat burned
  • Z2: 80% fat
  • Z3: 50% fat
  • Z4: 20% fat
  • Z5: 0% fat

In the settings you can:
  • opt to see Fat Burner (=default) / Carbs Burner / Fat Burner and Carbs Burner (Advice : do to consume too much carbs per hour, the absolute maximum is 70g/hour)

During your run it looks like this:

On Garmin Connect you can afterwards consult how many fat and carbs you have burned (if you have indicated in the settings to record it):

how to activate the app on your watch?
(it might be slightly different on your watch, this is how to do it on a fr735xt: from watch face - click start - choose an activity profile (eg Run) - hit down button - activity settings - click start - data screens - click start - screen 1 - click down button - field 1 - click start - hit down until you're over connect iq - hit down until you' re over fat burner - click start )

Advice by Susun:
For the users that want more accuracy, better if you use Karvonen formula using Garmin profile settings.
Karvonen method is more precise because is related to VO2 max for the most of people so I recommend it.

Go to your user profile and then HR zones configuration, choose %HRR and put your HR-Rest and set the zones as this:

Z1: 50-65
Z2: 65-75
Z3: 75-85
Z4: 85-95
Z5: 95-100(HR Max)
  • he's also using FW 5.30...

    garmin express 5.6.1.0?
    windows or macintosh?

Garmin express 5.6.1.0 (but same problem on older versions)
Windows. Tried on 2 different ones. 7 and 10
  • ok since my friend does not have the issue, I think it might be on the side of your device, some things you can try (try one at a time - after each record an activity with the fat burner and see how it goes to upload to garmin express):

    1. Remove the fat burner and reinstall it. (Record activity and see how it goes)
    2. When you deleted the activities: did you delete all activities or just the ones with the bad fit file? If you did not delete it's an option to try to delete all activities... (Record activity and see how it goes)
    3. Reboot the watch (just hold down the light button until the watch turns itself off). Restart the watch. (Record activity and see how it goes)
    4. Reset the watch to factory settings from within the system menu. Install the fat burner app. (Record activity and see how it goes)
  • Whatever happened (the problem ended up on both watches Fenix 5x and Chronos)
I did delete all activities to get all working again.
Did now delete the app from the watches - and reinstalled.
Record looked fine and did synchronize ...
Will try further on the next days and let you know if the problem comes back.
Thanks for your help anyway !
  • Hi,
it shows very high values - any ideas?

    Greetings from Germany community.garmin.com/.../1244294.jpg
  • that is indeed a very high value! the fat burner is based on the calorie amount (9cals in zone 1 = 1 gram of fat burned), is your calorie amount for this activity high?
could you post a link to your activity on garmin connect? maybe this will help to investigate...
  • i never have upload something to Garmin
i only take a look at your datafield and saw that
a reset put the kalories (and trip km and so on...) to zero but your datafield is high ...
  • I verified my code that the reset is coded and I just tested that on my fr735xt it is properly reset, it's possibly a bug on the oregon 700. I think my friend also has such a device, I'll ask him to verify and file a bug report in case it is a bug.

Could you also try one more thing? remove the datafield and reinstall the datafield and verify that it has the high values again. thanks.
  • good and bad news....
good news: we found the cause of the issue (info.calories is wrong in connect iq on the oregon 700)
bad news: I can not fix this myself, you'll have to wait on a new firmware release of the oregon 700 where this issue is tackled.

I've created a bug report ticket here: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/developers/connect-iq/connect-iq-bug-reports/1244623-oregon-700-info-calories-is-not-correct (normally this topic is updated once the issue is tackled)
  • many thnaks for your work ;-)

by the way: could you made an widget with the geocachingcounter for the Oregon 700?
  • hi peterdecker,

there is a new beta firmware out for the oregon700 : [h=4]Changes made from version 3.33 to 3.35:[/h]
    • Added support for ConnectIQ version 2.3.4.

    • Fixed issue where weather app could not show 3 digit current temperatures.
    • Fixed issue on the altimeter page where the x-axis and y-axis scales could not be changed separately.
    • Fixed issue on the Bike Dashboard where speed and speed limit could overlap.
    • Fixed issue where the custom map dashboard would not update when stopping or starting navigation.
    • Fixed issue where Irish Grid letter coordinates could not be entered.
    • Fixed issue where Roundtrip Routing would not work when calculation method was 'Prompted'.
    • Fixed issue where text would not fit on the Automotive Dashboard.
