HRV
Get the app.

Graphing.
The design currently only saves to 1 location per day. The timestamp is taken when the test starts, so autostart will take the timestamp at the scheduled time. This means that any saved test will overwrite any previous test of that same day. A day is calculated from the local timezone, so travelling won't disrupt the storage so long as you have updated the timezone before starting the test. The averages are a 30 day mean average.

Description & Explanation
Wouldn't that be nice. Will happen, but might take a while.
This page could be useful.

Notes
- Your device must have firmware that supports Connect IQ Apps.
- You can save the results by creating a log file. To do this you must work out which name has been applied to the HRV app file. The apps are in the /GARMIN/APPS folder. It will be a name something like A6227C9B.PRG. You then create a log file with the same name, e.g /GARMIN/APPS/LOGS/A6227C9B.TXT. Each reading you save will output a result formatted as ISO8601 date & time, hrv, avg pulse, 30 day hrv avg, 30 day pulse avg.
  • If you can find the time maybe you could test all 4? That might highlight if a particular strap differs from the others. Presently the only way to tell if you have the current version is visually. If the screen looks like the new version then it must be.

    Hi Sharkbait

Just updated to the latest version, and tested my two straps:

    Date BPM HRV Strap
    24 Mar 44 41 Tickr X
    24 Mar 46 85 HRM-Run

I noticed that the word STRAP and PULSE turned red a lot more for the Tickr X, sometimes together sometimes individually. I couldn't distinguish a pattern (inhale, exhale, rest) it seemed to be at any point in the cycle, but pretty much at least once in each cycle. The HRM-Run was much more consistently green.

By the way - the app (at least I think it was the app, but could have been the watch?) spotted when both straps were available and offered a choice, which was nice, but the HRV app consistently crashed after making a choice, requiring the watch to be restarted. I am on FW 2.9 on Fenix 3.

Hope that helps with your development - let me know if you would like me to perform any other tests. I actually have access to a Polar strap and and standard Garmin HRM (not Run) that I could also test if they are of any use to you.

Thanks for the input. It helps.

How long did you run the tests for? Try changing the test to manual, or the Timer duration to a greater value, say 2 mins or more. The hrvs should come pretty close to each other with enough data samples. If you are running a short test and losing lots of packets the app doesn't have enough samples to give a worthwhile result. Trust the reading with the least dropouts, eg the HRM-Run.

The STRAP indicator will go red when it misses a packet. There are 4.06 packets a second. Once it has missed 8 sequential packets it drop to search mode, and if that fails the app will automatically restart ANT. This is ANT functionality, not specific to my app, with the exception of the restart which I call.

The PULSE indicator will go red when the app has been too long without reading new data. This could be because of either the strap not picking up the pulse, or the strap transmitting a bad packet. In either case the app detects it should have new data by now, so lights up the indicator.

...let me know if you would like me to perform any other tests.....
Could you please clip the Tickr on the Garmin strap and see if that helps. I personally have 0 confidence in the majority of the recent soft straps. Even Garmin didn't get it right IMHO until they bought out the latest model. The old Polar ones used to be good, when they still had the fabric pickups. Anyways, I suspect that will net you a consistent result.
  • Same problem for me stuck on 2.30 . I did send an email to the garmin support will let you know there answer.

I tried 3 straps this morning. Two Garmin heart rate run and the Wahoo Tickr. My fourth, an old Garmin hard plastic strap is in another bag with my bike gear so I didn't have it with me.

    1. Garmin HRR - Ave HR 51, HRV 93
    2. Garmin HRR - Ave HR 46, HRV 72
    3. Wahoo Tickr - Ave HR 47, HRV 90

It looks like one of the Garmin HRR straps is giving me a low reading. I've got it set aside for now. I'll try the Plastic one tomorrow with the rest again. Yesterday with Wahoo I was 63, today 90. I'm definitely more rested/recovered today than yesterday and it also shows in another device that I'm using for recovery.

I did a test with the 2 Garmin HRR straps. I swapped the transmitters between both straps and basically got the same readings for the transmitters. Looks like the problem is not the soft straps but the transmitters. The low HRV transmitter is low on both straps and the high HRV transmitter is high on both straps. I did change the battery on the low transmitter but it didn't make a difference. The heartrate is pretty much the same between the transmitters regardless of straps, just HRV is different.
  • Which button is the "menu" button?

There is a power button, a "..." button, Back button, Enter button, and Up/Down buttons.

The "..." button is a menu button. You may have to press and hold it for a second or so to get the menu to appear.
  • I see both strap and pulse turn red quite often, sometimes together, sometimes just pulse. Should I be concerned I have a faulty strap / HRM? What other reasons could this occur?
  • If I go into the menu and then click on settings the app crashes with the IQ ! symbol, requires a reboot to get the app back running. Is this a known issue?
