HRV
Get the app.

Graphing.
The design currently only saves to 1 location per day. The timestamp is taken when the test starts, so autostart will take the timestamp at the scheduled time. This means that any saved test will overwrite any previous test of that same day. A day is calculated from the local timezone, so travelling won't disrupt the storage so long as you have updated the timezone before starting the test. The averages are a 30 day mean average.

Description & Explanation
Wouldn't that be nice. Will happen, but might take a while.
This page could be useful.

Notes
- Your device must have firmware that supports Connect IQ Apps.
- You can save the results by creating a log file. To do this you must work out which name has been applied to the HRV app file. The apps are in the /GARMIN/APPS folder. It will be a name something like A6227C9B.PRG. You then create a log file with the same name, e.g /GARMIN/APPS/LOGS/A6227C9B.TXT. Each reading you save will output a result formatted as ISO8601 date & time, hrv, avg pulse, 30 day hrv avg, 30 day pulse avg.
  • What does the number mean? How is it calculated?

What does the number mean? ...

It is an arbitrary number. A decline from normal levels may indicate you need to take it easy, or even indicate the onset of an illness. A rise may indicate improved fitness. Essentially you find your baseline, then judge your state based on the rise and fall of the number (in short the higher the better). My current intended use is for graphing over time to make subjective decisions.

    ... How is it calculated?

It is a logarithmic rmssd (root mean square of successive difference) of pulse intervals.

    - Comparison is said to be best based off consistent readings, advising a morning reading soon after you awake. Typically prone, or seated.
    - I plan to add a results graph in a future release.
    - Here are some links to some information from the Firstbeat website. Firstbeat analysis is performed on many Garmin devices. I have no affiliation, nor do I imply that this is a comparative or substitute of any of their products.

  • Thank you for creating this incredible App! (Garmin Connect IQ has life and potential after all) I absolutely Love this App and its ability to be able to provide another scientific way of knowing when I can function/perform optimally and when to throttle back.... This is extremely Valuable in my high tempo/stress related activities (work, children, training/exercise, Wife!) :D I'm also curious to see how it correlates with the build-in TE and Recovery Advisor of my Fenix 3, but most importantly I now have an on demand way of checking my HRV as it correlates to my established baselines and can adjust accordingly. I'm going to test this out over a week and then post an anticipated positive Review to your App in Connect IQ. Looking forward to your Results Graph, hopefully in the near future.
  • I haven't tested this app, but in my experiments I found that menu is accessible if you long-press the 920 menu button (3.07 firmware).

Ah, so it does. Thanks for pointing that out Travis.
  • This looks very interesting - looking forward to having a chart go with it.

Do you recommend HRV is checked at the same time each morning? Or could it be more frequently than that, or less so?

Sorry I followed the links to the background but there is a lot of info there! Just hoping there is a short answer to the above.

    Cheers

From what I have read I consider a consistent morning reading to be the way to go. That a trend over weeks is more important than a daily reading, with the exception of a sharp drop on a single day which could indicate the onset of something. I just wrote the app for fun, I think it best people investigate for themselves, I have provided a tool.

Many thanks for responding - I appreciate you only created the app, and yes we should investigate further ourselves :)
  • Thanks for this app, wasnt aware of HRV untill this app. Now i'm very interested and looking forward to see the chart in the app. I hope someday we can enter HRV in Garmin Connect, but that might take a while :)

It's for the best. Even if I had all the information in my cranium I'm not very good at writing thorough explanation.
