Now .. Your Heart and the Vivoactive HR device teams up to 'Measure your Sleep'

Get HR Sleep in the Garmin Connect IQ Store here ..

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/b...2-c9fe3f777fc0

Now measure your Sleep Performance with HR Sleep .. see how your sleep improves over time using your HR data.

Be sure that your battery is charged to at least 30% before running HR Sleep overnight. That green light .. is a little hungry.

Sleep Zones Example ..

Set Minimum Sleep HR - 40

Sleep Zone 0 .. less than 40 bpm
Sleep Zone 1 .. 40 - 43 bpm
Sleep Zone 2 .. 44 - 47 bpm
Sleep Zone 3 .. 48 - 51 bpm
Sleep Zone 4 .. 52 - 55 bpm
Sleep Zone 5 .. over 55 bpm

Thank you ..

    HR Sleep FAQ

I occasionally get asked .. "how do I tell when I have good sleep ?" and "do I have to edit my sleep data ?"

Well unlike Garmin .. that gives you light and deep sleep only, I give you all your HR stats. The thing .. you want to see the vast majority of your sleep time in Sleep Zones 0 and 1. You can look at the summary screen .. or the time screen for this data. It may take a day or two to get your sleep zones in the right place, after that you are going to be good to go. Myself .. as I am less active during the winter / spring until it warms up (yes it is snowing outside right now ), I find that the default 45 is fine for me right now.

Pretty simple .. if you need to, you can alter your Minimum HR value in Garmin Connect Mobile to get your numbers where you want them.

You do not have to edit anything .. you just start the app when you go to sleep and stop it when you wake up. No editing required. For those that want to retain their data, you can log the data to a text file on the Vivoactive HR upon exiting the application. Setup details are above in this thread.

    Hope this helps ..

    Possible Firmware 3.50 issue ..

Ok .. well day one on firmware 3.50 for the Vivoactive HR and maybe a firmware issue.

I had my device exit HR Sleep in what I would call an abnormal fashion today. It did not crash or anything, but it just did not exit as it should and no data was logged.

I just tried it now and it was fine, so I am testing today. I will make an update if I find an issue.

EDIT .. I have completed a 10+ hour test of HR Sleep using firmware version 3.50 and no issues were found.

However, if anyone has any issues with the new firmware .. please let me know.

    Thanks

New HR Sleep Version for Vivoactive HR

[Version 1.162] April 6 / 2017- Added user setting to allow the 'Sleep Zone' screen to be hidden. Setting is in Garmin Connect Mobile or Garmin Express. Default is normal screen display.

This was done as unless you change the minimum HR value, this 'Sleep Zone' screen will never change. It is something that is to me at least, not that useful data. Thus this new option for those that do not want to have to swipe through this screen.

As you have likely noticed, whenever you update a Connect IQ application .. Garmin changes the name of the application on your device. That makes data logging to the text file a pain, as you have to rename it.

I will try to do my part .. with no more changes. But this is the reason, and don't worry other developers have complained about what Garmin does as well.

In my mind .. they should use the same app id for the life of the application, as there is no need to ever change it. It serves no purpose.

I have been using the app now for a while and it works great.:) However, your remark about the majority of sleep should be in zones 0 and 1 seems a bit strange to me? Since zone 0 is equal or below the min HR setting, normally your sleep would not be in that zone for extended periods of time, except if your HR would be at your minimal HR setting for a long period of time? I've set the min HR setting to what my minimal HR is (measured over a longer period of time) and find most of the nights my HR is mostly in zones 2-3. My average HR during sleep seems to be about 8-10 higher than my minimum HR. There are nights that my average HR is lower (and I really 'hit' my min HR setting), and then the HR is most of the time in zones 1-2. But on 'bad' nights that could be zones 3-4.

I think the conclusion is that you make your own interpretation of the results presented by this app. And you can combine it with what is displayed on Garmin connect and using other apps (e.g. I use Sleep Cycle on my iPhone 6, which also gives very interesting results).

The main thing ... HR Sleep is consistent. Unless your fitness level changes .. in which case your sleep HR levels will either go up or down (more fit) you will be good.

Yes .. on better sleep days, your minimum HR as well as average HR values will be lower. On worse days .. they will be higher.

If you concentrate on anything .. it is these 2 numbers. :) Lower = good and higher = bad.

I have insomnia and I see very distinct differences .. some days during bad sleep, my data shows that my HR is nearly the same as when I am awake.

So are sleep zones 2-3 wrong ? That is entirely up to you .. but you are pushing your data to the upper sleep zones if you are finding that to be the case. You want your sleep data to be relatively even .. the lower zones on good days and the upper zones on bad days. If your min HR is set too high .. you may find that you will push your bad days almost off the chart.

    Take care ..

Due to some here that seem to like "DEEP" and "LIGHT" and "AWAKE" to measure sleep, I am going to add these 3 items to a new screen in HR Sleep.

Edit .. the new production version of HR Sleep is currently time in Sleep Zones 0-1 being DEEP, Sleep Zones 2-4 being LIGHT and Sleep Zones 5 being AWAKE.

The thing ... it will be CONSISTENT as far as the criteria for the above 3 items is concerned (unless you change your MIN HR value). The nice thing, you can use the data to compare one night to another one and no having to edit start and end data with HR Sleep.

It will be a NEW screen .. which you will be able to swipe to if you desire to see this sort of data.

    Thanks ..

I am done the update to HR Sleep .. a new screen was added for Deep, Light and Awake sleep data. It is based on HR data.

I also reverted to an older version where the Sleep Zone screen was NOT hidden. It was becoming an issue where hiding screens was making things difficult going forward.

I am testing change this today and will likely release it tomorrow.
