Runner is a spin-off from Hiker (https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/a230c855-7adf-415a-bb1c-289f27304563). The basic idea was to deliver similar functionality but in a running app. I have initially created two screens of 3 fields similar to the standard Run app. In additional to this 3 graph screens and the route run is plotted.

So far the feedback that I've had is to try and fit 6 fields onto one screens as switching screen when running is more difficult. While this is true the other consideration is keeping the text large so it can be read while running. I will review different options and may produce a number of mockups.

Future updates to the app will include:
  • Lap notification screen allowing you to review the previous lap.
  • Refinement of the pace calculation as this can affect the pace graph.

If you have any other suggestions then please let me know and I'll see what I can accommodate.

    A few ideas:
Optimised 6-field screen layout with smaller labels and larger numbers (see the 6-Field Data Field in ConnectIQ)
10s avg pace and speed fields
Time of day either in the title bar or as a field
    Predicted (5k,10k,Halfmara, Marathon) time field
Black font on white background option
Possibly remove the title bar to save some space

trail runners like info, and can stop to look at it :)

I notice you got a "negative" review for not having enough info on a screen - might be from a trail runner, like me :) I need different data than a road runner, for me I really like the 6-data-fields-on-one-screen of Hiker, without having to scroll between screens. Some combination of the 2 apps would be great for trail runners, we can usually slow down a bit to look at a watch (so we can read all the tiny numbers). And we don't usually care very much about our pace in the moment, but it's nice to see it as a graph after. I'll probably keep using Hiker, because of that 6-field data screen, but that app also has extra stuff I don't usually need (like Pressure and Temperature). Maybe a combination app, where you can edit which data screens you see, and have the option of the 6-field-screen, or 3-field-screens?

Personally, I'd love to have on one screen: time of day, timer, distance, ascent, elevation, heart rate; and have graphs for elevation, heart rate, pace. I agree with Lu's comments though, time of day could maybe be along the very top to save room, then you'd have room for pace also on a 6-field screen :)

Also I would LOVE to be able to see those graphs again after I've saved my activity. I try to remember to take a picture of them (the elevation graph is my favourite).

My dream app, which I would definitely pay for, would combine dwMap with Hiker, and let me customise the data screens (edit fields, and which screens I see), maybe through a website instead of trying to do it all on the watch or in Garmin Express. dwMap has kept me from getting lost so many times and lets me run in unfamiliar places, but your data screens are WAY better, and I love the graphs and the trail recording function. So... get together, guys :)

    Thanks for building great apps!
  • Hi Lu and Katie

I've made the first step to some of your requests, you can now have 6 data fields on one screen. If you remove the tick from page two in the settings it will combine all the data fields onto the one screen.

    Nice App

I'm a keen hiker, trail runner and road runner (have been for 10+ years). I love your app. Very configurable and great layouts and GUI.

    (Hiker app is great too).

I would use this exclusively except I really depend on seeing my cadence when running (especially on the road).

Apart for that (really important running metric), this is a really impressive app. Fantastic work.
  • Great app for trail running

    Hi,

Thank you for your app, it is exactly what I was looking for since I have my forerunner 235.

Here are few suggestions I would dream of...
    - have cadence and average pace as datafields
    - you could put the heading in a corner of the route graph (or somewhere else on this screen)
    - possibility to choose the duration of data shown on graphs (2 hours is a good compromise but sometimes I would like 1 hour and some other times 3 hours)
    - I noticed that on auto-lap you show difference of time compared to the previous lap. It could be interesting to show other infos such as ascent and descent during this last km/mile.
    - the 6-fields screen is fine but I think I would prefer it if it was on 3 lines with 2 fields per line

By the way, you did not mention anywhere that you welcome donations, are you a benefactor of humanity ?
  • Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the long delay in replying.

I've now added cadence as a data field. You'll be able to choose this from the app settings within Garmin Connect or Express.

    - I've now added cadence as a data field. I'll look to doing average pace next. Currently I use the lap pace as this is an average for the last mile or km.
    - I've upgrade the trail map. You now have a direction indicator and a scale. The scale appears after the extent of the map exceeds 1 mile or km.
    - Changing the duration would be tricky as these settings are hard coded throughout the app.
    - I like the suggestion about the auto-lap info. I'll see what I can do.
    - Deciding on a layout is always tricky. The current 6 field screen tries to deliver two good readable fields when you're running an the 4 smaller ones. I personally feel this is the best compromise rather than 6 of the same size.

By the way, you did not mention anywhere that you welcome donations, are you a benefactor of humanity ?

Just doing this for fun at the moment but thanks for the offer.

  • Hi John,

Thanks a lot for the feedback and the new features. The trail map is now really awesome, I can't see how it could be better.

I look forward to the new versions you will release!

Thanks again for your good job,

    David
  • Fewer data fields

Great looking app! But, alas, no use for me as my eyes can't resolve the screen on my FR 230 with any more than 1 or 2 data fields. So, probably not a very popular request, but could the app have the ability to configure the number of data fields per screen, and which fields are shown?

    Kindly,

    Nick.

Thanks for the compliment. The feature you're asking for is already built into the app. Using either Garmin Connect on your mobile or Garmin Express on your computer edit the settings of the app and tick "Show page 2". Remember to scroll to the bottom and click Save! This will then display 3 large data fields per page rather than the 6 on screen at once. You also have the ability to pick which data fields you want to show.

Shout up if you want help with getting to the settings area of this app or any others.

    Regards
