Requirements ..

Minutes .. HR reading and GPS
Minutes Gym .. HR reading only. No GPS needed.
  • I just know that after looking at hundreds of data records .. I could not see a pattern as every rule I came up with, there was at least one record that threw it out the window.

I think that intensity minutes could be based on more than a minute time frame .. as that is the frequency of the HR readings on the VAHR taking into account that Intensity Minutes are a 24/7 thing and the VAHR does not get your HR every second like in my app.

So with 1 second recording enabled you don't think it reads HR every second?
  • Yes .. but that is a different animal all together. The one second recording vs smart recording (about 4-5 seconds), is for activities and has no impact on normal 24/7 OHR readings which is really the foundation of Intensity Minutes. If that setting did impact Intensity Minutes it would almost turn these things into Fitbit devices where the HR is on a lot more and your intensity minutes are awarded as such.

The fact that intensity minutes are a 24/7 thing and you do not need an activity to get them (and the inability to determine so far how they are truly awarded .. by both me and you) it tells me that they MAY not be awarded strictly on the minute proceeding their being awarded and is likely some sort of averaging. It is really still a mystery at least I am no further in coming to an answer.

My new watch face design has a Moderate / Vigorous and Total intensity minute display on it. It is all done .. but a Garmin Connect IQ store bug is preventing me from deploying it. It is my most popular app .. and I do not want all those emails that could follow due to a bug that Garmin has yet to fix. No botched deployments is the desire. But I am watching it closely.

My HR Frequency app tells me that the VAHR does a reading every 95 seconds. Just today I got 13 moderate minutes .. and I did nothing. Better than having to run for them I guess.

    Has this being posted?

Alternatively, can the info from minutes gym be added to the data fields or as a widget?

Yes .. you can look up HR Lite or HR Lite White and they do have an Intensity Minutes display option in them. It was deployed some time ago.

You can see all my apps in my signature.

Re Minutes Gym .. no, it will only run as an app. I do not do widgets or data fields.

  • I got notification from Garmin that the breakdown of the Intensity Minutes for the week (moderate or vigorous) should be fixed in the next Vivoactive HR firmware release.
    Here is hoping .. :)

EDIT .. I have confirmed that in Vivoactive HR firmware version 3.38 beta (released December 22 / 2016) this is resolved.

  • I'm using the VAHR.

Can I use this App (Minutes) at the same time that I'm using other apps such as Run or Walk?

Also, it seems that I cannot have both Minutes and Minutes Gym installed simultaneously?

    Thanks.

No .. you have to use it by itself. However .. part of the app is that it will allow you to upload the data to Garmin Connect. When you press the right button you are given a resume / save or discard menu. Btw .. I used the sport of 'Running' in these 2 apps, so that is the data you will get.

You can use Minutes and Minutes Gym at the same time. All you have to do is go to the particular download pages and download (the first time you install them. After that use the update in Garmin Connect Mobile or Garmin Express). I have both of them on my Vivoactive HR with no issues.
  • Thank you for your quick response.

Now I understand better how it works.

Edit to add: I used it on my run today. Worked great. Thank you for this app.
  • [Version 3.02] Sept 13 / 2017

    - Changed Sport to GENERIC from RUNNING for MINUTES and MINUTES GYM.
  • Btw .. Garmin just released ver 5.00 of the firmware for the Vivoactive HR and it allows you to set ZONES for your moderate and vigorous intensity minutes.

This is WONDERFUL news .. as maybe the intensity minutes will now work as designed. I am now running this firmware and should see in a while if all is working well.
But I do recommend updating just for this reason. But .. really they are going to push it to you when you sync so not like you have choice in the matter. But the firmware update is a pain (it hangs etc) not all that smooth, but pretty normal for Garmin. But once installed I have seen no issues as of yet.
