  • There's likely something screwy going on with the app store or maybe GE or the FW (I've only heard of this with the va-hr). But the way it works is you should not do a new download to get an update. Garmin Express will do the update (if you're set for auto update). If you use GCM/iOS, there is an "update Available" button when you look at the app. On GCM/Android (and you can't use Garmin Express), the best is to uninstall and reinstall.

In fact, downloading something that's already installed may be why this happens. GE knows it's got an update for something on the watch, and also thinks it's got something new.

If you use GE, the updates should come through fine on their own. GCM, it's manual.

I decided to uninstall the apps and watch faces that kept asking for updates in express. Then had to unplug the watch from my pc to let it update. Plugged it back in and the requests were gone. Reinstalled the apps and now they are updated and no issues when syncing in express. Including simple heart and hike2 were among the apps I had to uninstall and reinstall.

    Thanks for the tip Jim!

Also I have auto update apps set in express but it does not update them. Only notifies you that some need updating. You have to tell it to do the update. I actually prefer that.

With GE, it does seem to vary if you look at the details of what needs an update before you plug in your watch. If you don't, it just does it.

My watch apps used to update on Garmin connect modile but it doesn't now and on express it doesn't unless I tell it too. I have data field i don't want updated right now and it will not update when I sync on both express and GCM Android.
  • Is there a way to know what version I have loaded? I know I had 2.2 when I deleted and reinstalled. If I press download in the store will it be updated? Will the file name change?
  • I just noticed that in Garmin Connect they give you a breakdown of your Intensity Minutes for the week. Just click the info in your Intensity Minutes item.

Now if only they would fix their bug .. so that Minutes would work. :p (see below re this issue)

This is interesting .. and I shall see how it updates after my activity today.

Edit .. it does update after your activity and is accurate. I just wonder why Garmin hides it .. it should be this way on the device and a lot more visible on GC.
  • I sent Garmin an email .. and the Intensity Minutes issue (re Week Moderate and Vigorous Minutes) is in their queue.
They will investigate it and respond as appropriate.

Edit .. got a reply from Garmin, they were able to reproduce this problem themselves. So .. hope it should be fixed soon.
I will update Minutes and Minutes Gym when that time comes.

  • New Minutes and Minutes Gym version now available ... added in more robust error handling. I should have done it a long time ago, bad me.
Sorry for the inconvenience to those that use the data log feature. Be sure to check your data log file names.

But I am done with any upgrades for a long time now. It is solid .. unless someone says it has an issue, I am not touching it
as it does what it was designed to do quite well now. Re the quest to find the mystery of the Intensity Minutes .. that may be something
that we will never really know 100% about.

If it is not broken, time to just leave it alone. Oh .. it will get one more update when Garmin fixes the Weekly minutes bug.

  • Measuring every minute I don't think we can find the exact HR that triggers it. Seems to be triggering about where it should tho at least for me it is.
  • I just know that after looking at hundreds of data records .. I could not see a pattern as every rule I came up with, there was at least one record that threw it out the window.

I think that intensity minutes could be based on more than a minute time frame .. as that is the frequency of the HR readings on the VAHR taking into account that Intensity Minutes are a 24/7 thing and the VAHR does not get your HR every second like in my app.
  • A new Minutes / Minutes Gym version today .. just to help avoid any confusion.

It will now display the requirement to do a '10 minute warmup' before getting any Intensity Minutes on the activity (left) side of the screen. This is a Garmin thing .. and hopefully this should make it more evident that this is needed.
