Now on a Vivoactive HR near you .. DROP

Get it here .. https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/4d0ab435-0f2d-4c93-8eae-368fcda9c64e

If your heart is important to you .. time to make it better. Time for DROP.

Remember .. if Drop drops out before 2 minutes (no pun intended), you need to update your Vivoactive HR firmware to at least 2.65 beta.

Thank you
VivoactiveHRGuy

Note .. screen shots are subject to change, see full change log below for updated details. Screen shots may be simulated to show application operation.

Now .. measure your Heart Rate Recovery (HRR) for 1 and 2 minute time frames.

Drop has been tested on firmware versions 2.60, 2.65 beta, 2.71 beta, 2.74 beta, 2.80, 2.90, 3.30 .... to 3.90

FULL VERSION HISTORY - CHANGE LOGS

[Version 1.19] June 7 / 2017

- Fixed a bug where the app would crash with the new Vivoactive HR firmware. It was my fault and I do apologize.

[Version 1.18] March 10 / 2017

- Data logging will now happen at the 120 second mark only, and not when you exit the main screen.
[Version 1.17] November 8 / 2016

- Screen layout improvements. No other changes.
[version 1.16] October 28 / 2016

- Changed Drop startup routine to be like my other applications.

- Improved exit routine with no summary screen when no starting HR value received.

[version 1.13] August 7/2016

- Changed summary screen to display more useful data. Now included starting HR values as well as 20-120 second readings. Thank you to LARS for the great suggestion.

- If you exit early by accident .. the summary screen will now update your Drop HR data on that screen as well. So do not move unless you really want to exit. ;-)

- Small cosmetic changes

[version 1.11] August 6/2016

- Added more data to export option. Now date and time, starting heart rate, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 second heart rate values will be logged.

[version 1.10] July 27,2016

- screen text change and drop data export formatting change. Note data logging exports your actual heart rate values not the 'drop' numbers from the application.

[version 1.08] July 1, 2016

- improved exit. It will now not exit until the back button is pressed.

[version 1.07] June 28/2016

- added data logging as outlined in post below.
- altered status bar on main data screen
- added vibrate on start and bye screens
- text change on welcome screen

[version 1.06] June 28/2016

- cosmetic changes only

[version 1.05 - June 27/2016]

- Measures heart rate recovery for 1 and 2 minute times.
- Shows heart rate compared to starting heart rate value as you are measuring ( + / - )
- Summary screen with resulting 1/2 minute data displayed.
- Easy to understand layout and user interface.
- Status bar to help you wait for those 2 minutes.
- Support for OHR
- Tap to turn on backlight.

Application Details

Configuration:

No configuration required

Requirements:

Ant+ Heart Rate strap optional .. but highly recommended for best results. Optical Heart Rate (OHR) will work as well (Vivoactive HR 2.65 beta or newer firmware recommended for OHR use), however I still recommend using a HR strap if available.

Remember .. the more the drop, the better your heart.
Not a substitute for real medical advice. :)

To do data logging with Drop you need to do the following .. - Connect your Vivoactive HR to your computer via your USB charging cable. Sorry, it must be a computer, smartphones will not work.
    - Navigate to the Garmin\Apps\Logs folder
    - Create a text file named the same as your DROP program file. See details below.
    - Exit .. and enjoy.
    - Your Drop data will now be logged upon exiting Drop to that file.

Note .. the data is in the following format (CSV format):

    2016/08/06 2:22 PM,73,69,65,64,62,61

The data is as follows ..

Date Time, Starting Heart Rate Value, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 seconds heart rate values.

If there is no heart rate data captured .. it will show as zero, ie if the program ended early.
You can use a program like Excel (or any of your choosing) to analyze or manipulate your data should you desire.

Note .. DO NOT delete that file, as the Vivoactive will not recreate it, but will skip the data logging if it is not there. You should not have to recreate it if the Drop version changes as the program name should remain the same.

Re the DROP file .. when you connect to your Vivoactive HR, it may look like this. The photo below is the Garmin\Apps folder. Note the NAME of the DROP prg file as you will need this for your data logging.

You need to name the text file the same as the PRG file for DROP. Right now it is a 19kb file (October 28/2016) .. and the best way to tell which one it is, probably by the date / time of your DROP install.

So for the above .. you would need to name your data logging text file as 6ASI1701.txt
This text file goes into the GARMIN\APPS\LOGS folder

If you want to be really sure you have the right file .. you can open the file in Notepad and search for "Press Right Button" .. as below. If you find it .. you have the right file.
Do not edit the file as you will need to install it again if you do.

Sorry .. there is no way around this. The steps we need to go through for our data. :)
    Enjoy

I have been asked about heart rate recovery (HRR) .. and what the numbers mean.
Here are some guidelines to show you about your heart and the value that DROP gives you.

Note .. these are only guidelines from 'the web' .. you know yourself best, so take that into consideration.

In regards to the difference between the two numbers (starting and end numbers as displayed in DROP).

This is for the 2 minute timeframe:

Drop less than 13 .. this would be the time to seek medical advice and is considered to be concerning.

Drop from 13-21: Your biological age is slightly older than your calendar age.
Drop from 22-52: Your biological age is about the same as your calendar age.
Drop from 53-58: Your biological age is slightly younger than your calendar age.
Drop from 59-65: Your biological age is moderately younger than your calendar age.
Drop of 66 or more: Your biological age is a lot younger than your calendar age.

In other words .. the bigger the drop, the better your heart.

Remember, this is not a substitute for real medical advice. :)

Just a reminder .. that if you are using Optical Heart Rate (OHR) with DROP (with no HR strap), it is recommended to use Vivoactive HR firmware 2.65 beta or newer (2.71 beta) .. due to improved performance. Thank you Garmin for fixing the Optical Heart Rate issue in that firmware version.

    [version 1.10] July 27,2016

    - screen text change and drop data export file formatting change for time values.
    - if you have version 1.09 you do not really need to update to 1.10. Only I will likely notice the difference. :o

Today .. a new drop version with more data when you export.
Yes .. if you are like me, you want to know.

    [version 1.11] August 06/2016

    - added more data points to export option.

But .. if there is anything you would like to see in Drop .. let me know.

Just to show that our training, and sweating does matter.
Probably my best Drop score ever today.

    2016/08/06 02:22 PM,166,114,91

A Drop of 75 in 2 minutes. I will take that all day long.
But yes I know, done on the old version .. and why there is a new version. :)

    Wishes for future versions

First: Really great app! Tested yesterday after several intervals. Very clear UI.
I have 2.5 wishes for improvements:
    1) Wouldn't it be a good idea to show the starting HR not only during measurement, but also on result screen? It makes a big difference in the interpretation if I check the drop after a recreational run with 60% of max. HR or after a finish with almost 100% of max. HR.
    2) Didn't tried to read the log file from PC, but would it be possible to implement a log page in the app to read it directly on the watch? This would be great.
2.5) Translation in other languages would be nice. For German I could help 😊

    Regards,
    Lars

Those first 2 are very good ideas. So yes I can display the starting heart rate as well as the heart rate at each of the intervals as well as the drop at each.
I love when good ideas are exchanged. :)

Re the German .. sprechen sie Deutsche ? My German is very rusty. I do not have any experience on how to add other languages, so I cannot do that right now.

    Thanks Lars
