Smart Bike Lights (Data Field) / Bike Lights Control (Widget)

I've made two open source CIQ applications to control ANT+ lights:

- Smart Bike Lights (data field): https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/0d9fd828-c932-4470-9c37-fd2828881888

      Configurator: https://maca88.github.io/SmartBikeLights/

- Bike Lights Control (widget): https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/fa3c2332-76e3-4ba1-8528-32a0fd617ab1

     Configurator: https://maca88.github.io/BikeLightsControl/

Smart Bike Lights features:
- Automatic light control (Smart mode) based on the configured filters (sunset, sunlight, speed, ...)
- Manual light control (only for Edge devices with a touch screen or devices with CIQ 3.2 and more than 32KB memory)
- Records lights modes that are displayed in Garmin Connect

Bike Lights Control features:
- Manual light control (available to all devices)

Both applications can be installed on the same device, which can be useful for low end devices (e.g. Edge 520) where "Bike Lights Control" can be used to change light modes manually and "Smart Bike Lights" for automatic light control.

Currently registered ANT+ lights:
- Bontrager Ion Pro RT
- Bontrager Ion 200 RT
- Bontrager Flare RT
- Garmin Varia RTL500
- Garmin Varia RTL510
- Garmin Varia RTL515
- Garmin Varia HL500
- Garmin Varia UT800

in case your ANT+ light is not on the list you can help by doing the following:

1. Install Bike Lights Control
2. Pair your bike light with your Garmin device
3. Open the widget:
- Edge with a touch screen: post which numbers are displayed on the buttons and what mode each button represents when pressed
- Other devices: Select the "Light modes" menu and post which numbers are displayed in the menu and what mode each menu item represents when selected

Example for Bontrager Ion Pro RT:

1 -> High steady beam
2 -> Medium steady beam
5 -> Low steady beam
63 -> Day flash
62 -> Night flash

There are some features that could be possible to add in the future, but would require Garmin to add them to the CIQ api. In case you are interested in any of the below features, consider upvoting their feature request thread:

1. Control lights based on the ambient light sensor available on some devices:
https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/i/bug-reports/ambient-light-sensor-api-access

Known issues:

1. Unable to use Tempe Visualizer or TyreWiz Data Field alongside Smart Bike Lights:

  • Hi,

    is it possible to use custom lights in RearVue820? When I open configuration list limited and there are no custom modes available:

    My intention is to change original modes into customs where light power is reduced to 10%.

  • The configurator for the new RearVue 820 does not include the additional mode that can be created manually.

  • I installed Smart Bike Lights with an Edge MTB and a Coospo TR 70

    here are the light modes:

    1 full steady beam

    5 low steady beam

    6 night flash

    7 day flash

    8 breathing

    63 group flash

    Everything is working, except that the symbol doesn’t show the actual light mode. It’s only showing a question mark.

  • The reason I’m asking is that I’d like to know whether the Giant Recon+ HL1400 or HL2600 can be controlled using the SRAM E1 bonus buttons when connected to a Garmin device.

    Thank you very much in advance for your time and assistance. I look forward to your response.

  • I have the same light and bike computer and experience the same issue. The headlight turns off after a few minutes or around 600 metres. I tried all the things you did to no avail. When my headlight turns off I can turn it back on using the Smart Light Control data field. Although sometimes it takes a few button presses. I don't know if this is a Garmin or Magene issue but if I run the headlight unpaired it doesn't turn off after a few minutes. I'm thinking about trying a different brand headlight but obviously if it's a Garmin issue this will be fruitless.

  • Hi maca,

    I have Garmin Egde 1030 Plus, front light Garmin VARIA UT 800, rear light Garmin VARIA RTL 515.
    The Smart Bike Lights worked perfectly during the ride for every mode S(Smart), N(Network) and M(Manual).
    The S mode(Smart) had been working flawlessly for 3 years, for both lights.
    But now, when I go for a ride, the Smart mode is working for the first 2 hours, but after 2 hours,
    the front light (VARIA UT 800) still in Smart mode switched off, the rear light(VARIA RTL 515) in Smart mode
    remained switched ON. To switch ON the VARIA UT 800, I had to use Manual mode, even the Network mode
    stopped working.
    Here below is the screenshot of my Edge display during the ride:

    The same behaviour happened yesterday, during 2 hours of ride, evertything was OK, but after 2 hours,
    the front light switched OFF again.
    Can you please check my configuration below, if there is something wrong?

  • I am trying to use the Magicshine EVO 1700 UT with a Garmin Edge 1040 Solar.

    So far, I have found the following ANT+ mode mappings for this light:

    • Mode 2 → Low
    • Mode 3 → Medium
    • Mode 4 → High
    • Mode 6 → High Beam Day Flash
    • Mode 7 → High Beam Night Flash

    Would it be possible to add the Magicshine EVO 1700 UT to the supported light list?

    Also, could you please explain in detail where I should paste the configuration after copying it to the clipboard?

    I was able to generate and copy the configuration to the clipboard, but I am not sure where exactly I am supposed to paste it.

    Thank you for your help!
