Watchface: M2

This is the support thread for the M2 watchface:

has created a Facebook group for designs here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/423319952037948

And this PDF files contains a quick visual index to the designs posted in this thread: >>>    ForumProfiles1.pdf    <<<

To create your own design or modify one, install & use the M2 Designer app on your watch. These are the steps you would go through:

  • Optionally paste a text code into the "Profile Text" setting of M2 Designer & save the settings, or load one of your previously saved designs (either via the settings or the in-app menu).
  • Run the M2 Designer app (found underneath your activities list) and create your design.
  • Once you've finished, open the Garmin settings for M2 Designer.
  • The text code in "Profile Text" will now represent whatever your design looks like, so copy the text code from "Profile Text" - and be careful to select the whole text.
  • Close the settings for M2 Designer.
  • Open the Garmin settings for M2 (watchface) instead.
  • Delete any text that was already in "Profile Text" - this step helps to avoid potential problems
  • Paste the text code into "Profile Text".
  • Save the settings.
  • Now when you view the M2 watchface it will show your changes.

A guide for accessing the Garmin settings is here: https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/w/wiki/14/changing-your-app-settings-in-garmin-express-gcm-ciq-mobile-store.

  • What does battery % fill mean?

  • (What I want to know is why your name doesn't show up when I type @ericallenboyd !! Slight smile)

I think you are referring to the icon called battery % fill? If you add that icon (which isn't really an icon) in the same field as, and later than, one of the other battery icons then it gets drawn over the previous battery icon as a dynamic fill rectangle showing the current battery %. I.e. it just creates a dynamic battery icon. On its own it does nothing.

It was just a slightly bodgy cheap way for me to create a dynamic battery icon, and still allow someone to select different colors for the outside and inside of the battery Slight smile

  • I'm losing a lot of battery % per day, around 20-25% from just passively wearing the watch (and I have phone notifications disabled). Then I do a run or gym workout and close with a yoga session and I'm at under 40%, not ready for the next day... Could it be that the watch face I'm using causes significant battery drain?

  • Wow that is a high battery usage. So no it really shouldn't be happening because of the watchface - in fact the design you are using has no 1Hz elements I think, so it only does any drawing once per minute. And then losing another 35% just from a workout seems excessive ...

The only times I have ever experienced large drains in the past it seems to be due to firmware problems or because of the Bluetooth connection between watch and phone. I suspect that sometimes if you happen to be at just the wrong distance from your phone then the Bluetooth connection can toggle on & off rapidly and either this or some other bug can cause the display to redraw more often than once per minute. Sometimes I've noticed my watch can seem to get stuck in high power mode all the time, so if you notice that your glance gesture display seems active continuously without performing a glance then that would be really expensive.

One thing you can try is in the Garmin settings for the watchface, change the Status Update Rate to 60 seconds (instead of 15 seconds) - this is how often the watchface itself will check whether to refresh the display due to a change from Bluetooth Connection or Notifications.

Or try powering off your watch and then back on again to reset everything and see if that helps.

You could also temporarily try using one of the very simple M2 Designs from the top of this thread and see if that makes a difference. (But I would try these tests one at a time - don't do them all at once as you won't know which one could make a difference!)

There have been some posts about excessive drain on a Fenix 6 possibly due to unused watchfaces still running some code in the background, but I don't know about for a FR245 ...

  • Not sure why my name does not show up. I have been a forum and garmin watch owner way back.

Thanks for the clarification on the battery % and makes sense. I just ended up creating 3 battery icons that will show up or not via the visibility setting for each icon depending on the percentages I set in the global settings. Filled green from 75-100, filled white 21-74 and filled red when 20 or under.

I figured this way it might take less battery and was easier for me to figure out prior to your post. Thanks again.

  • I always keep my phone on me, but after disabling the Bluetooth connection the battery drain stopped and I get about 5-6 hours on 1% of battery. I wish there was a way to enable period auto-sync but I guess manually syncing it a couple of times a day is my only option.

  • Is there moon phases and age option? Thx

  • Sorry, no there isn't - it's on my list of work "to do" though Slight smile

  • Hi would it be possible to add the Vivoactive 4S as a supported device for M2 Designer? The Captain Marvel variant seems to be already on there.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi, and sorry the 4S is missing currently! I've managed to hit a Garmin upload limit and waiting for that to be increased so I can add more devices in again - see this bug report: forums.garmin.com/.../could-you-please-increase-the-upload-limit-for-the-app-iq-file-to-be-larger-than-15mb

I may be able to try a workaround this weekend - either removing some debug information from the upload, or making a separate version just for the 4S - I'll post back with what I try
