Weather Underground widget

Available in the app store! For the vivoactive and new forerunners!

This will provide access to data from thousands of weather stations in the "Weather Underground". Only tested in the US, but I understand it's available in many other locations.

Not just the weather in your town, but it could be your own back yard, if you have a weather station connected to WU!

To use this widget, you WILL NEED an "APIKEY" from WU. You can get one for no cost but only if if have a weather station that sends data to WU,

.
Many of the following posts are for the old version of this widget which is no longer available, so check at the end for info on the new version.

  • If you're inside and not getting GPS, the only way the widget knows that is trying to get a location and it can't. In other words, the widget doesn't know about GPS until it tries to get a fix.

Going outside to get GPS should work fine. Your other option is in app settings, you can set a WS close to your location (go to the wu website and look for a station year you)
  • The link provided in the description on the Garmin IQ Store page to get the API from WU does not work for me. Takes me to a page that requires me to log on to or to register with WU. Since I have an account, I log on and then I end up at my normal home page. Was really hoping that this widget would work as WU is my go-to weather website.

Once you're logged in, on the top right, click on "more" and then something like "Developer API", IIRC, and that's where you get a key.

OK, did that. Apparently I can get a free API key as a developer (which I'm not). Since I have to fill in all of the fields on the request form to get an API key, do I just make up some info for the Project Name, Project Website, brief description?

I don't think anything thing is checked (it wasn't for me). Developer keys are very low access keys, but more than enough for this widget.
  • I am another interested Fenix 3 owner. I really miss WU weather on my Garmin and found this thread by coincidence. If you ever plan to port this app to F3 it will be great :)
  • New Device Supported - Edge520!

I'll be updating the app store shortly with a version for the Edge 520

    https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/f509fc4e-7f1f-48a5-b337-ed86668c5f6c

There are few things to note for this device though.
    • Widgets on a 520 will run as long as you're viewing them (unlike watches), so every 15 minutes, the data will be updated.
    • All data is on a single screen, so no switching to see Sunrise/Sunset
    • Like on watches, pressing "menu" (long press of the upper right button) with get the current GPS location and the data for that location, but "start" short press of the same button with request an update of the data for your current location

If you're having trouble getting a key from WU, once you are registered, check under "more>Weather API for Developers"
  • By the way - for Fenix folks - it WILL be soon. I didn't want to release both devices at the same point, so if anything is found with the edge, I can release it at the same time as Fenix support.
  • Error -300

I am getting Error -300 (see image)
